Silent Hunter 3

Today I ordered the game that has currently knocked the sim community on the floor in amazement, and it should be arriving from Play.com this week.

One review of this game has already given it 100% - possibly a little overzelous and fanboyed up, but still, its apparently THAT good.

One sticking point has been the release on DVD format only, which means I've had to shelf out for a DVD-Rom too, still, I've been guaranteed its well worth it.

What an absolutely incredible game. The sea graphics are so authentic you'd be forgiven for cracking open the dramamine, this is hands down the most visually impressive experience I've had since Il2 first came out, trust me on this - go flank speed at sunset on a choppy north sea and see what I mean - gobsmacking.

If you have the slightest interest in sub games or just want something a little different
and involving you NEED this game, it really is THAT good. I've only just scratched the [pun]surface[/pun] here.

Yeeees sank my first merchant today. Spotted him in the north sea doing a leisurely 6 knots - Basically I charged him at flank speed on the surface, firing a spread of 3 torps, first 2 missed, the 3rd didn't, and he went boom at about 900 yards range.

2400 tonnes notched up :D

Homewood bound now - these early Type II boats run out of juice quickly, so with about 30% derv left I'm heading home to Wilhelmsaven.

I tagged a lone C3 in the dark on my second patrol. Kind of more challenging to aim at 2am than in that tutorial in broad daylight, hey? I'd post some screenies, but have just discovered that all the shots I've taken have come out plain black :(

Yes - the difficulty is easily scaleable, and you can get your crew to do everything for you, but be very clear this is a submarine simulation, lots of patience, planning and waiting involved, your boat will do 15 knots surfaced, thats about 8 days of sailing just to get from port to the patrol area, and even then you are not guaranteed a victim. You can accelerate time to allieviate the long periods of nothing happening, but don't step into this expecting a ship shooting arcade game.

Well I had about 7 days of rough weather in the North Sea, my patrol area was just east of the Orkneys and the 24 hours passed with not a single sighting, so after patrolling for another 48 hours I decided to head down the Easet coast at a leisurely 5 knots, awful weather and poor visibility meant I was just waiting for a break in the weather and an opportunity to use a torpedo or two, nope the storm just contiinued on and on.

I reached East of Norfolk and the sea began to improve, then the next morning it was like a millpond as I reached the English Channel.
Spotted a small merchant and approached at periscope depth to within 1000 yards - I asked my WO for a firing solution just to make sure, and my first topr was bang on target (couldn't miss tbh)

Merchant starts to sink, but I sent another torp just to make sure, in this area of shallow water the wreck was sticking out of the water. I surfaced to allow my happy crew the opportunity to see their handywork, when my lookout calls 'Warship Spotted'
2 armed merchants heading our way - our victim was obviously able to initially call for help and this was the response.

Just managed to crash dive in time as a 4" shell misses my conning tower by an inch, I'm now sitting silent and shallow in 40m of water as 2 angry little ships are circling overhead, I think they are moving away, slowly.

Sounds like great fun Skii, it seems to me that the game builds up tension well.

It certainly does Wedge, it manages to combine the boredom of nothing happening with the sudden emergency situations very well - you just never know what is going to happen, and I swear to god that 4" shell just shaved my boat, the waterspout as it landed was incredible.

I learned the vital lesson last night of not hanging around to admire my handiwork as ships tend to radio other ships in these situations :heckle:
Manning the deck gun to put a few shells into my semi-sunken victim really wasn't the best idea considering - the good news is that these little warships are not equiped with depth charges so I just need to sit tight and wait for nightfall, then I can surface and move on.

Best game ever IMHO.

Well I think that I may go and buy it today then as it sounds fun, maybe we could play mutliplayer later :)

My system is an Fx5900 with 1Gb DDR333 and XP2500, and it runs full tilt with no visible slow-down or choppyness - the only sticking point is an Nvidia bug which causes problems in the bridge-binocular + attack periscope view (soon to be fixed with the next drivers)

Excellent I will be able to run it maxxed out too. I have just got to nuy it now. ;)

Though annoyingly you can either have AA OR that nice soft focus effect, but not both, and screenshots i take with 8xAA on come out black :(

How do you play it? Sounds silly, but sensible answers only. Is it 3rd person...or do you swap between positions in the sub and back out.

if so do you swap positions with a single key stroke?

How do you control the boat? Mouse, keyboard, commands to the engine room?

When you speed up time, by how much do you speed up? 2x....4x? And how long is each 24 hours taking you in real time? And if you are all speeded up, does it slowdown if a target comes into view?

Radar? Who's in control of radar and Sonar? Do you contact home base alot?

God...my mind is FILLIMG with questions...filling....you'll see them pour outta my ears soon ;)

Who decides your routes? How big is each " map" and do you stray off it? Do you get "map icons" and if so are they accurate?

Is it WW2 based or modern?

Well Zak I will let you know the answers tonight after I have played it for a while.

Time acceleration can be up to 1024x on the nav map, but I think limited to 16x or 32x in a 3d view, you control the boat mostly with the mouse (well I do) but there are shortcut keys as well, and if you play with 100% realism you get no outside view (but then how are you supposed to take screenshots :p)

Its first person Zakk, its basically the same concept as the bombers in IL2, its a 3D model that you can change positions in, the command room is 3D, the bridge is 3D, all of th interior positions are 3D APART from the periscope views which are 2D but the viewing optics show 3D.

You can navigate around the boat by simply pointing your mouse button at the relevant area and clicking, or you can jump there using the Function keys, or just order the officer to perform the task by clicking on his profile and clicking on the pop up menu.

Far right one is called 'in-game-weather-effects' - download it and take a look, its very impressive ;)

You can alter the passage of time by hitting the + and - keys on the numeric keypad all the way up to x 1024, you'll need this if you intend to travel across the Atlantic ;) U-boat missions lasted months :) The game will revert to normal time if anything happens.

Probably the best way to describe this is the movie 'Das Boot' as a game. You are in a WW2 U-Boat matey, you can start at the beginning of the war in a Mk2a boat and progress by sinking more and more tonnage, thus earning more and more 'renown' (in game currency) and getting better and better subs with better crew. You take part in dynamic campaigns where ANYTHING can happen and every day is different, you are assigned a patrol area and can njoy relative freedom to go where you like and sink whoever you like.

Oh and did I mention the whole world is there to sail around if you want (fuel permitting) and the topography and oceanography is very accurate ;)

2nd mission in its a tough game :) First mission saw sod all, this one Ive had 3 long range sonar contacts on way out, chased them all but no visuals yet :(

Im afriad Zak isnt allowed this ;) He will go mad for it

Well I managed to complete the navigation training last night and nearly the deck gun training too, I just could not locate the last merchant ship for the deck gun training.

Well I got sunk :(

I sunk an Armed Merchant who had spotted my periscope by searchlight, he was heading dead on towards me and a single torpedo stopped him in his tracks, unfortunatley I wasn't able to get away from the scene of the crime in time and a destroyer arrived sweeping the whole area with asdic :eek: He started a depth charge run and in 30m water there wasn't anywhere to hide, 3rd run got me.

blimey.....we are moving on in terms ofgaming now....5 years a go a 3d sub game would be impossible.

Well I have only been training up to now and that was pretty good fun, but quite hard. The gfx are very good indeed.

Its a real time hole this one, I've had it for a couple of days now and im spending my days at work with huge bags under my eyes from the nights before mission. It just eats time! I've also not had much action, on my first tour I also had a couple of long range contacts they never materialised though. Im having a tough time sorting out the crew and resting them etc. Ive had a couple of incidents where they are just too knackered to carry on in the diesel room and the boat grinds to a halt! Great game, just lovely.

Yep even with time compression its a long haul, Im on my way back from 2nd patrol had yet another long range contact, just saved the game to have a crack at her this evening. Ive also worked out that to get to patrol area and back on 1 tank of fuel you need to run submerged and use the electric engines, dam slow that way but at least Ill make it home, on way out to patrol im taking the most direct route and on way home Im hugging the coast more to try and catch merchants with guard down.

Have to say for a sim the controls are dead simple. But I started to get seasick last night looking on 6x zoom on periscope when hunting.

Am right in thinking that when you pick up a contact on say 060 degrees you immediatly head that way and start looking? I cant seem to track these long range contacts at all

60 degrees bearing is the bearing from your bow, so its basically to the right of you at about 2 o'clock. You will see the small compass in the menu bar shows the degrees from ownship, and the outer ring shows the true compass heading, all you have to do when your sonar gives you a bearing is click on the outer ring corresponding with the inner ring degrees value, and you are on course.

I have mate - but it relied on me getting the sonar bearing, turning my boat to the exact heading,and surfacing at flank speed (17 knots)

Eventually I was able to spot the shape in the dark up ahead, and was able to lock the UZO onto it (hit the spacebar) this is in effect assigning your deck gun to shoot it, but it has the added advantage of marking the target for you - just leave the gun unattended ;)

I jased this merchant last night for miles, he was going full steam and I fired 3 torps after closing to 1000 yards - he started to zig-zag and avoided all 3 , so I jumped onto the deck gun. He didn't last much longer :D

Unfortunately 1 hour later I was sunk by a Destroyer who arrived on the scene - one BIG tip

After sinking your victim, get the hell away from the scene of the crime. :crazy:

Great I will have to get my training completed tonight and go out and do my first mission. The tutorial vids are great.

Lush is the word Im looking for...Went out on 3rd patrol tonight, 24hrs NE os Hull, get there no probs, see Hunt Class 2 Destroyer....Bit ambitious for a 1st enagment, head on fire off all 4 torps, crash dived, hit bottom, blew ballast and popped up 10 ms away !!!. Dived again and crept away, surfaced at 2000m less periscope and we lobbed shells at each other for a bit and I lost him in dark. Assign crew to repair all the beaten bits. Stay under, next 3 cons all warships so stay hidden. Bob up at dawn and get attacked by Hurris on 5 occasions, flame 1 with flack gun but he didnt come down. Finsh 24 hr patrol under water and set course to hug the Lincolnshire/Norfolk coast then a quick dash to safe water. Running on top see a big fat merchant, no scope so stay up aand aim a course to cut in front on him, fire 1st torp and miss, close some more and let 2nd go....Think its missed just about to fire 3rd and take evasive action what S M A C K....2nd hits and I get 6395 merchant tons for my 1st victory...Returned to base to an iron cross 2nd class :)

Does this game rule...? I think it does

This game is too good to be ignored by the general gaming community, and I'd be keen to see what Nick thinks of it, join in and spread the word matey ;)

4th mission I drew a patrol just off the south west coast of Ireland.....Decided to run the channel and ran into 4 Warships off Dover when popping up after a small merchant....Had a mare of a time getting away from them, had 4 lots of depth charges go off but crept away running slow and silent....Went home to be honest was 2 damaged to continue. All mended now and Ive drawn the north of Ireland as a patrol route, decided sod the channel run so im on course for Scarpa Flow, then round the top and down the side for my patrol....Hint if going throught striaghts of Dover go at night and go submerged in the narrow point

...and wave at my sunken VIIb as you go past, (after I got on the wrong side of a Destroyer)

Must..concentrate...on....work...

One great thing about this is the renown system...You earn renown points per mission and can spend them on subs and crew, after 2nd mission I upgraded sub to VIIB much better sub, then rest Ive spent crewing up as best I can.....You also get to award medals, promotions and quailfications to your own crew as they earn them.

At this rate Ill be doing a reader review before Deckard gets one done ;)

I think that I will have to spend more time on this game tonight. i managed to carry out the deck gun and flak training last night and the torpedo training too but that is really hard, I had alot of torps that just hit the side of the hull and stopped. I may to complete my exams tonight and do my 1st mission, plus I am not working tomorrow. I have too many great games on my pc atm, this, GTR, IL-2, WoW, I just do not have the time.

Try the 2 types of fuse in the TDC screen Magnetic and contact, also check your angle, 90 degrees is your best angle.

Scarpa Flow on way to patrol has being kind to me.....2 small merchants for 195 tons and Ive avoided all warships :) Both with deck gun

Anyone noticed what happens when you start a saved game whilst submerged ? Klaus and co are on the bridge with the binoculars whilst you are 50m underwater lol

O M G just relised Im on another rig and 56K from tomorrow lunch till Monday Lunch Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :(

haviong now watched, (and dribbled over) the movies from the web site I have to say that screenies are a waste really..you need the fluid movement of the water and the sounds to benefit from the beauty.

Question: can you use external camera anytime? Is it one of the "full real " options?

AND does it entre around a pivotal point (ie the sub) or is it free moving?

I have realism at 76% basically in IL2 terms thats Externals on, like a free camera and the weapons officer can do all targeting for you, everything else is turned on. TBH I hardly use the external, so much to do keeping crew rota going, setting courses, looking through scope, checking depth under keel, hiding from Warships and chasing merchants and trawlers it never occurs to me to use it. After sinking 2 ships this patrol for 195 tons it made me relise how dam lucky I was to get a 6000+ tonner as my 1st. As a single player game this is better than IL2. Mainly because the AI is soooo darn good

External camera only if you have it enabled in the realism options, full reall you don't have the camera - so I play everything max difficulty apart from camera (because its just too beautiful :D )

The camera is free moving, it doesn't follow your boat but you simply point it where you like with the mouse and zip along there with the cursor keys.

Any time, free moving.

The AI is incredible, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a human opponent, and this has more atmosphere and [pun]depth'[/pun] than all the other games I have played put together.

It is a true masterpiece of a game.

Reminises back to Silent Hunter on the Speccie 48k:D

Graphics don't look nearly as nice as they do in mnet's screenshots. The game makes use of the next gen cards pixel shaders I guess.

It looks pretty good on my machine and I have an X800 pro in my shuttle.

you know you're doing the right thing. On my third patrol now, sitting on the sea floor awaiting the arrival of the contact... Tube doors open. Brilliant game.

You tried Shift-PGUP for the soft focus effect in my screens? You can't have AA at the same time unfortunately.

Bum! Well my order is in on play.

Patrol 5 save kept crashing after 5 mins so went home out on mission 6 atm and so far 2000ton merchant and 550 ton armmed trawler :)

Edit now onto 4000 merchant tonnes and 1000 Warship tons...Have lost my AA gun though :( And still only got as far as Scarpa Flow. :rockon:

Perhaps a dumb question, is there anyway to play with the hardware AA and AF settings of this game?

I don't think theres a way of altering the settings in the game aka Fs2004, I think you are limited to your desktop settings.

Same patrol and Im upto Merchant number 3 and another 1000 tons to my total...Getting very low on deck gun ammo, Im still going to complete patrol though. Then how do I come home? Back through the deep water North of Scotland or do I risk a Channel dash in the shallow water??

If you want to play safe, go North. English Channel is the quick route, as long as you stay submerged by day and recharge by night you should be ok matey. Just be bl00dy careful - you don't want to be sniffed out by a destroyer group in 30m water :eek:

I think Ill go Scotland, theres a V & M Destroyer about Scarpa Flow but I can come through at 40ms then maybe pick off a merchant outside Hull then accross the North Sea home. 5 Ships 7000 tons giving me 8 and 13000 ton total

Yep multiplayer is supported but I haven't tried it yet :)

The Amiga one was silent Service I think
