    My thoughts on PVP calculations..

There are some very interesting discussions going on in the Blizzard PVP forums, about contribution points and how the actual numbers add up.

Killing 1 lvl 60 private as a lvl 60 will get you 160 points.
killing 1 lvl 48 private as a lvl 60 will get you about 20 points..

Those are the headline figures, but it goes on to continue to talk about numbers of kills vs contribution points.

Kills are not the be all and end all of the ranking system. Contribution points are, and as such you get ranked on those points.

The interesting thing is putting those figures together in light of the raid or group situation you may be in.

With the figures as they stand being in a raid group with 40 other people might not be the best way forward.

1/40th of a 160 points doesn't do a great deal for your contribution points and while you may be getting a nice number more kills, its not neccessarily going to do you that much good.

If you where to solo and do half the damage to a lvl 60 before he died (which i'm pretty sure a lvl 60 mage could well do) thats a whopping 80 points to you straight away.

Where as if you did that in the raid group thats only.... 4 points. So the raid group would need to kill 20 lvl 60's to rack up the same amount of points.

In my experience of PVP thats simply not the case and the amount of deaths that occur are certainly not the lvl 60's.

From now on i'd suggest we go as groups if there are many hexus horde around (multiple if needed) and solo if you are the only person there.

Feel free to point out anything i've missed, but i feel there is a risk vs reward here that makes raid groups a bad choice.

I have double the contribution points with Kerilus as most Scouts/Grunts, so it's not just about contribution points either...

I know you've said level does come into it, and I've said that that majorly sucks, BIG TIME, but I don't think you can say contribution points is the be all and end all.

Yeah sorry Kerilus, my calculations don't take into affect the lvl limit of how many contributions your rank can account for.

I think there is a lvl limit of how many contribution points can be used per lvl. Thats why i've got over 1000 more than butcher and i'm still a rank lower than him. he was 60 and i was only 51.

    Code:
    Lummie 767 6883 8.973924381
    PUG 159 1373 8.635220126
    Ravenblood 336 2898 8.625
    Madocks 155	2489 16.05806452
    Butcher 442 5487 12.41402715
The code above shows HK for last week from the other PVP rank thread, and the number of Contribution points.

The interesting figure is the number of points per kill. I think from this figure Madocks should just let us know if he joined many raid groups during the first week.

    My gut instinct says no.

Be interested to investigate this further this week, as i've been in many more raid groups as pvp has intensified...

NB: my number is not directly comparable as I'm on a different server, so ranked differently.

I never join raid groups. Given my char is a 60 mage I tend to dish out the hurt, being in a raid group tends to massively dilute my points with people just standing about or fighting guards. I only group with my guild, if none are about I solo.

Mages excel at farming kills in zerg fights. Not quite so hot solo, but still not bad.

Yeah, but solo doesn't happen on a PvE server (our server) unless I get lucky and someone is PvP enabled.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

    Same really (I play PvE).

Jumped a couple of people solo, but it rarely happens.

Hehe, I rule - check out my pvp points

Mainly while PVP ing, i either worked solo, or joined a group, very rarely did I join a raid

And being lvl 52 (at the time) I always chose the level 60s to shoot

Just to confirm the differences between solo and raid groups my contribution points for 2 nights running have been remembered and used to check my assumptions, and i have to say i'm massively correct in what i'm thinking.

    2 Nights ago 108HK = 473 points in raid...
Last night 122HK = 2283 points in solo and small Hexus.Horde Groups

Finally broke 1000HK too, now sitting at 1177

Was good working with Lilith, Velan, Azog last night in PVP. Glad to have saved lilith from lvl 60 rogues a couple of times, and kill them too. Well pleased to be able to help.

Azog's tendancy to charge into the enemy made it very difficult to heal him...

but it was good fun, not quite as good as usual with the outweighed numbers last night...

My yesterday points last night were 54 kills, 1377 CPs. That was solo - definitely seems the way to go.

I'll check my kill/cp when I get in later, only had 16 kills but I'll guess around 250cps

Yeah, last night was Very Tough late on when you left though, i'm talking serious tough....

I remember a few situation where i noticed, azog going round the side, saw a lvl 52 rogue
pick up his tracks, and went to close the distance, azog was backstabbed and about half health when i got in range, managed to help take out the 52 rogue, but half way through got backstabbed myself by a lvl 60 rogue..

Azog died, and i got out JUST by the skin of my teeth with the lvl 52 rogue being split 50/50 with azog.

The only point i'll make with soloing, is that the targets you are choosing you HAVE to make the kill, talking big damage quick, that usually means for me, chain lighting followed by an instance shock and then chasing them down for melee or keeping them in range for another 5 seconds for another shock.

Mages, your talking fireball/pyroblast to start, fireblast instant and then cone of cold for burst dps... and if needed a fireball after that for sheer range if they are running.

Hunters make sure you mana sting the enemy mages, i had a guy called budokee (lvl 60 hunter constantly stinging me to reduce my mana pool) Good job i can cure posion which is what its affect is.

He'd singled me out and constantly found him hunter's marking me. It was soo enjoyable watching him try time and again to single me out, until he fell into my trap and was owned hehehe. Hunters rock so hard at long range but omg they are fodder for me up close.

For the most part we were outnumbered 25:8
While you can stand up to 3:1 odds with 75 alliance 25 horde numbers from ability to hit segments of the line, if we got rushed at those limited numbers, everyone died. To the point i was fighting inside one of the houses against 2 alliance...

PVP is good fun and i just so hope i get to have a decent rank, the purple top lvl equipment is calling out my name hehe..
