    Compact Camera

Well I used my aged Coolpix S6 for a wedding the other day as I didn't want to lug around my D80. Pictures were OK, load of dust on the lens though (now cleaned off!) pics are not as good as what I though they could be. So whats new in the world of compacts? I know I am not going to get DSLR quality, but what would be a nice upgrade to my S6? Would like to stay with Nikon if possible.

    Re: Compact Camera

One to try, rather than a direct buy recomendation is the Nikon P5100. I picked one up and really like it, but it has a bad rep for focus speed (the reason it dropped quickly in price down to £170). I did look at a range of stuff including the canon G9 (very nice), but price and size were the clincher for the nikon (I can also use my external nikon flash). Review wise it normally comes out as OK rather than great, but the reviews were at full price. Sounds simple but half pressing the shutter to pre lock the focus helps a lot, or selecting the right screen mode. If your not bothered about it being a overly compact then I would look at other cameras.

I would suggest trying the P5100 as a possibility, if you get on with it its a great camera. Jessops do them, my one was from amazon for £170

Hmm bit chunky, was looking for something a little thinner, that one could just chuck in the pocket so to speak.

Have a look in jessops at one, they are resonably compact.

Havent played with one in the flesh, but what about those waterproof / shockproof olympus cameras? Look pocketable in the adds, and have seen some good photos taken with them.

Sadly not a lot is new. They've increased in megapixels to beyond the capability of the sensor size (around 8mp), they've added larger zooms, image stability, face-detect and that's about it.

The IXUS is a well reviewed camera though, if a bit pricey. Absolutely tiny but great image quality, features and ease of use, though of course you'd have to learn the canon system rather than the nikon one. You can also put (completely temporarily) custom software on the canon to turn it into full manual control etc.

    Re: Compact Camera

Thats the problem with compacts. Its like the CPU wars, thinking more ghz is better (which is true sorta). More MP is not better, higher ISO is not better as you get more noise and distortion, particularly at low light stuff. I am after a point and shoot thing really, the P5100 is a lot smaller than I expected, but you still have to fiddle if you want optimum settings, if I want to be fussy, I break out the D80.

I'm not adverse to using a different make, my parents did have a Canon before but it kept breaking. I saw the Ixus 90 in Jessops, quite nice to look at too. They really need to do something about the sensor though. Might just wait for the next breed, I'm in no hurry, my N95 can take good shots too sometimes!

    Re: Compact Camera

What was wrong with the canon sensor in particular? AFAIK all compacts have exactly the same problem that's purely down to sensor size.

Have you considered the Ixus 80? By being 'only' 8 MP it's a pretty good match for the sensor size, and it should be a bit cheaper than the 90. Review here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd1100is/

Alternatively there is a review of the 90 here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/digita...-IXUS-90-IS/p1

I'd love to see what new feature they can add that's actually worthwhile, as nothing major has happened for a while. DSLRs have been advancing quite a lot recently, but none of those changes seem likely to make it into a compact.

    Re: Compact Camera

I have a Canon Ixus 850IS, which I'm quite pleased with. It suffers from all the usual problems of sub-compact cameras, such as occasionally indifferent focussing, blown-out highlights, colour imbalance (pictures seem at times to have too much blue). However, its very easy to take good pictures with it, its fast, the image stabilisation works well, and it is very small. I would advise getting some high speed storage cards for it though.

the sensor is actually pretty good in the ixus 90, start up is fast, shooting is fast...it is actually pretty good.
