My wife started with a 1000d and had no issues with it as a starter dslr, cheap as a entry model but takes all the Canon EF and EFS lenses. She took some great photos with it while we were away last year. She still uses it when she's going somewhere she doesn't want to take her 5D and as a backup body when shooting...

I effectively paid £200 for my Nikon D40 with kit lens (there was a £50 cashback deal and they sent the cheque twice :-) ).

It's done some of the best pictures I've ever taken, the 6mp sensor delivers really beautiful clear pictures even under relatively low light conditions.

I've got a D90 now, with 16-85mm lens (and a sigma 30mm f1.4) and while I'm now getting more consistent pictures, I'm getting fewer of the "wow" pictures.
Maybe that's due to my lack of skill, lol!

Anyway, both DSLRs give way, way, way nicer photos than the compact cameras I have, they're just more of a pain to carry around.

i went to my local today to have a grip of the cameras there and i still really like the feel of the canon....i think i will be getting the canon for sure although the nikon did feel pretty comfortable aswell! im so stuck at the moment one which one to go for....i like the canon better due to its price aswell as the grip but the nikon is the better camera although the grip is not as comfortable...its such a tough choice

I started with the 1000D and I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a 'lemon', it has all the features a complete novice needs to get them going and takes lovely pictures in the right hands. It's a good beginner's camera that's really nice and light, it was just a bit dinky for my big paws.
