    Cheapest DSLR reccomendation?

Thinking of selling my casio elixim, to get something decent!

Was thinking a DSLR.. What I really wanna do, is take pics of moving things like car, at high shutter speeds... So it almost loooks still, but the road is blurry?

That'd be panning, basically invoves moving the camera with the object to keep it in focus for a split second... quite tricky to master.

Unless you cheat and just go alongside the moving car in another car.

    Edit: Oh, reccomendation... 350D.

Ahh panning... Thought it was just high shutter speed pointed straight at the moving object!

You don't want too high a shutter speed then but good panning technique.

You can still pick up a Konica Minolta Dynax 5D with 18-70mm for~£450 if you look & it has the advantage of in-body image stabilisation/anti-shake.
KM sold their camera division to Sony recently & the 5D is being replaced by the new Sony Alpha 100 - see http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?p=789883

Not that up on the current market mate so can't advise on what cam to get- altho i'll give you my limited knowledge. Regards the the frozen car effect, you don't want an insanly fast shutter to freeze the car and keep the road blurry. What you want is about 1/100th, 1/125th of a second and you need to follow the car with the camera as it moves so it seems as tho the car is frozen and the road/track/whatever moves. It's called panning, i hear it ain't all that easy to get the hang of at first, but if you practice you'll get there. I also want to try out this technique, produces a really striking effect imo, alas i need to get my bum 1000m up the road to hednesford hills raceway and, well, i never seem to get round to it. Anyway i'm waffling, back to your cam. All i can say is that i'm happy with my d50, and that people talk highly of the equivilant cannon (350D?). I hear pentax have a new one out *ist or something and a few threads down sony are bringin one to the market altho i dunno when. Check those four out on http://www.dpreview.com/ and any other they have on there.

d50 is the cheapest at the min (£400ish) and a very very capable camera. i've used the nikon d50/d70 and canon 350d and seen many many pics from all. to be honest there's no difference in the pics at all apart from a little more noise at high iso in the d70. the features are very similar in the d50 and 350d each having it's strengths. the d50 also comes with a very capable lens whereas the kit lens with the 350d is a little hit or miss, some are fine, others are poor.

go to a shop and handle them. i much much prefer the nikon from this point of view (and the spot metering). don't rule out the konica minolta or olympus models yet either.

my 2p - go get a d50 and save £90 you'll thank me for it one day

The cam i'm using at the moment (my sisters) is one of these jobbies http://www.pbase.com/cameras/casio/ex_p600_pro

Is it capable of panning? I find it rather annoying, as the moment you press the button, the picture is taken a bit later! Not instantly.. To be fair, i havent played around with any of the settings on it.. So I might be able to keep this one

Them D50 pics look excellent on pbase.. What would I expect to pay for a basic one?

how about a non-D SLR? you could pick up a very respectable nikon f80 with a half decent lens for well under £200

Well he would have to pay for film and developing cost which is quite uneconomic for a starter on a budget.
    Primary kit:
    Fuji S5 Pro - Nikkor AF 50/1.8 - Nikkor AF 85/1.8
    Epson RD-1

    Film Kit:
    Leica M3 - Summicron 50/2 DR - Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 - M-Rokkor 40/2

    Olympus OM2n - Zuiko 50/2 Macro - Zuiko 50/1.4 - Zuiko 35/2.8

yes, but gradual spending of £3 on a 36 roll and £5 on processing after an initial outlay of only £120 would take some time to get to £400 and would sting the pocket far less. it may even be rather enjoyable as well as teaching you to think before pressing the shutter

anyway i'm not starting a film vs digi arguement, just throwing around ideas
