I shoot with a 5D2. I used to shoot with a 10D. My partner has a 400D. Honestly, once the photos are printed up you can't tell the difference (if the photos were printed under optimum lighting conditions). Now, I use the 5D2 for work and put about 40k actuations on it a year so it'd kill me to have a tiny 550D with fiddly buttons to work with every day... but honestly, if I weren't a working pro I'd just buy whatever is cheapest (seriously) and spend the rest of the money on glass and on travelling nice places to shoot. Don't get too wound up measurabating about the gear :-)

If your a Bokeh fan, FF is a nicer body to have for it. i do agree with exactly what you say BUT there are a few reasons to buy expensive gear.
What if your in a poor lite hall watching your daughters school play and all you have is a 500d and kit lens. You will struggle to get any decent shots with it.
So imo, for any hobbiest, a f2.8 fixed apparture lens of whatever zoom range u fancy+ ability to shoot 3200 and getting nice decent cleanish usable shots at that ISO level should be enough for most cases.
You simply wont get the above on teh cheapest body and kit lens u can find!
Having better lenses and better body that allows you to bump ISO to something like 6400 will help capture cherish living memories that happens once in a life time.
i recently shot my wifes graduation ceremony in a poor lite Hall sat midway from the stage in a very large hall and had i not purchased a 70-200 f2.8 IS for my 400d, there is no chance i would have nailed a shot like this.

btw that guy is from dragons den.
So expensive equipment can be needed in certain situations, extreme sitations more like but of course, if all you do is shoot during the day in a bright sunny day outdoors, a 500d plus kit lens is more then enough.
But, life is not as simple as that right? we do have day and night cycles in our planet and dont forget, Subjects dont always stand still. So for those reasons, getting expensive/good gear benefits any hobbiest.

this a joke? the pics you have posted are hands down the best landscapes i have seen from any forum member across varuous forums, not just here. you look as if you take landscape shots for 20+ years. no way can a amature take shots like that off the bat!
what person who hasnt been doing it long enough can produce shots like this?

Thanks you like the results and the pic? i need to PP it properly though as you can see.
well, too much head room, you seem to have chopped the ladies foot off, and your shutter speed was too high because you're shooting AV in a constant light situation against dark clothed people..
other than that, nice timing on the capture
and ISO1600 1/200 @ 2.8 is oodles of light
