Which filter for 1 second daylight exposures?

Inspired by a project I saw a while ago, along the lines of 60 one second exposures, I thought I'd have a go myself. However, whilst I know I'll need a dark filter, I've no idea how dark to go or how much (preferably not that much!) to spend. Any suggestions appreciated.

I'd say have a look at the Cokin P series stuff.

You buy an adapter for the filter sizes you have for your lenses, then you load in the P series glass. You can get plenty of second hand stuff on ebay for very little, I've no experiance of the chinese nock of stuff they also have thou.

The nice thing about Cokin is it works with all your lenses, its only for when you've tripod'd up due to the bulk on the end of the camera, but you can really experiment, get some gradiated too. Whilst lightroom lets you add such filters a bit, you only get 4 stops and the quality shows.

Use your camera to meter a typical scene at the same kind of time of day, then work out how many stops you need to reduce the light to get an exposure time of 1s?
