Interesting write up about it:

I think that this is going to be a posers machine.
There is simply no point having something that is 'beautiful' but will be needing a host of supporting equipment, so you'll have your NAS slung next to it, the USB for your keyboard and mouse, the displayport for the screens..... It's just not going to look 'beautiful' once all that is on display next to it.
It will be very hard to upgrade, it appears that it is only really the RAM which can be. Don't really see that as a good thing I've not needed more than 24gb on my main workstation for years. In fact I won't be upgrading it ever I don't think. Meanwhile, HDDs and SSDs have been put in every 6 months or so, and the graphics cards are probably going to be replaced soon, so they will have managed about 2 years.
This simply isn't a product for a professional power user. I think the reason this is angering people is because it is seen as a dumbing down, innovation isn't happening.

none of this stopped BMW selling lots of X5's. Lots of those needed RAC and AA vans to support them
nor people queing to buy the Mazda RX8.. and they still to this day need a fuel bowser in tow.. when an Integra Type R will kick then to death in performance and handling AND do double the mpg if you ask.
ask enough owners of either and they'll properly slag them off for something.... or other... mainly fuel use and stuff failing.
but..... didn't stop people wanting to be seen in them.
now.... I wanted an Antec Skeleton.. I mean REALLY wanted one....
PROPER wanted... desired... lusted after
then I playe with one at HEXUS towers.. and it was quite fiddly.. was gonna get dirty with no filters etc.. and I then didnt buy one.
but do I still hanker...?
yup!!
If I had spare time to build one.. would I?
yup.....!!
Humans are rules by emotions. If they weren't.... the E type Jag would have been left to die.. it is HIDDEOUS to drive... hiddeous. But it does make you go firm in your trousers to look at...
the new Apple Pedal bid.. works in people's heads.
If it looks right, people buy it. And you can't knock Apple for taking peoples money AND them being happy for it. It's not robbery.. it's genius.
Pesonally...
frikkin hate it. Ugly mofo

A lot will depend on the cost (it's Apple, so it won't be cheap) and the final specs but I think the new design is lovely and cunning too. I had a brief conversation with someone who saw the display model 'in the flesh' at WWDC and he said it looks absolutely stunning, it's really small and that the layout is ingenious, if a little stymied in terms of internal expansion..
Now, if they'd only release a semi-affordable 'Retina'/HiDPI/4k Thunderbolt Display too then I'll be on both like the proverbial rat up a drainpipe. I've been using my HP 30" monitor since 2007 and monitors don't seem to have moved on that much in the intervening years..
The design looks nice but I wouldn't call it an innovation just because of that (and I love Apple), plus ever since I read about the pedal bin thing it can't be unseen haha
It's built to apples standard of just working however what people have said about the lack of upgradability is very true you could adapt the old Mac pro. Further more the ease of Hackintosh these days will allow people to make some much cheaper power houses.
Just got one of these for my GF, its stunning
I'd love to see PC builders making a box like the new Mac Pro. People mock it, but it's exactly what I want. It's got very low noise due to low fan speeds, because the actual design of the box pulls air down across all the components with less encouragement from the ventilation system. Then there's the fact that it's tiny, and it doesn't announce itself. People might mock it for being like a bin, or an ashtray. Fact is, it's a shape you're not even going to notice in a room and that's a good thing. I don't want a massive box announcing itself in the room if I can avoid it, and even a small form PC tower is still big.
This fades away because it's the opposite of boxy. It's not going to look out of place in any style of room. If Scan could create something for PC owners along these lines, I'd be very interested in buying one.

Surely the reason PC cases are mainly boxy is because that's what benefits us...
What I mean by that is that as a boxy box we can fit many many combinations of whatever components we want.
If I were to buy the new Mac Pro, I'd not only be stuck with the limited spec as shipped, but also hobbled by the upgrade/change potential. I may as well have bought a laptop - as most have similar upgrade ability.
Either way, I don't know how previous poster bought one for his GF, as website still says "coming soon".
