Re: Need a new work laptop

No it wasn't to be fair, its a budget range laptop (about £400ish) round about 3 or 4 years ago. Read up on this model though if you're seriously considering it, it's getting about 60-80% typically in reviews so has a few issues.

    HP Envy Touchsmart 15

Here's some of the criticism's about it:

    AGAINST
    Rubbish battery life
    Iffy trackpad
    Poor viewing angles on screen
    Loud and hot
    No SSD

On paper, the specifications are impressive for the price, but the cut corners are obvious in the keyboard, touchpad and screen. A solid laptop then, but we’d hope for more to replace our desktop full time.

    The Good
Slim for a desktop replacement, stylish aluminium body, super-fast application performance, responsive touchscreen.
    The Bad
Lack of SSD storage can slow down the Envy when starting up and shutting down.
    The Ugly
Keyboard is irritatingly difficult to master, touchpad is a little stiff, unimpressive battery life.
    Bartender's Score
    6/10

Hmmm, might need to go to PC world or similar and have a look at current offerings to see how i feel about the designs. Doubt they will change a lot for the pre-christmas lappys

Re: Need a new work laptop

Personally I'd seriously consider the Samsung options, if only for the high quality matt displays. Why most manufacturers insist on a glossy screen I don't know...

Re: Need a new work laptop

If the Ativ book 9 pro drops by £100 in the next few weeks, its a no brainer. They gave me a budget of £1000 exVAT and i dont want to push my luck too much with my new employer so at the moment its out of my price range. I could go for the non ultra HD display but it seems a bit of a shame. Ill see how the next 3 or 4 weeks pan out

Re: Need a new work laptop

Just saw some stuff about the sony Vaio multiflip laptops. They do the 15" one with 2880 x 1620

I can get i7 4500u, 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM, 1GB GT 735m and the stylus within budget... give or take a few quid.... reckon thats the one!

I'd say Samsung seems like a really nice machine but not upgradeable so if your happy with 128gb SSD and 4gb then go for it. I was close to buying one.

If not then Maybe Lenovo yoga pro 2? http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops...pro/#techspecs or New one from dell coming the precision M3800 http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/c...00-workstation Looks top of the line but also pricey I'd imagine I think US price is $1800

Re: Need a new work laptop

Prices seem to have gone up across the board now... must be something to do with christmas time

Sony with all the options i wanted is out of my price range, as is the Dell.

Everything is going to seem crap in comparison.

Re: Need a new work laptop

Christmas sales that used to start post-Christmas seem to be getting earlier and earlier, and usually now pre-Christmas. Wait??

What happens will probably depend on how careful people are still being with money. If that Christmas boom time ticks on and on and sales are below prediction, expect discounting to start, and quite possibly aggressively. On the other hand, if sales figures are robust, it won't.

Re: Need a new work laptop

Well to update this thread, my boss increased the budget to £1600 Inc VAT and i made the decision that actually, i want a lenovo. As much as for the purpose of looking professional as anything else but thinkpads have pretty legendary build quality stemming back to their IBM roots. I currently have an AMD based x121e as my personal laptop and, despite it being slow, its been utterly solid.

From there, i figured i still wanted decent portability and to be able to "dock" the laptop, so it was between a T440s and the Yoga. I went for the Yoga as it actually worked out cheaper allowing me to get the i7, SSD, dock and a 3 year warrenty within the allowed budget. The other advantage of this is that i can actually use the laptop as a touchscreen demonstration device.

Ill have to make sure i post a review when i get it, exciting times

After reading the first few lines I was just going to to say get the Thinkpad Yoga. It's an awesome little device with a nice keyboard to boot and dock station, good choice!

..as long as it's actually a Thinkpad Yoga, not a crappy Ideapad Yoga..

The ideapad of my better half lasted exactly 1 year and 1 month before it completely crapped out (not turning on anymore from one day to the other). Stationary use only. It's like they use all the crappiest materials left over from testing or something. The keyboard for example was shiny/glossy after just 4 months and started behaving erratically after 5 months. Replacements? No chance. Not even on ebay from the Chinese sellers. Webcam worked when she got it, but turned out to be dead (not detected anymore) a few months ago (tried to use skype.. "no webcam? what?!"). Sensor buttons have a mind of their own, dead battery which may or may not last long enough to casually change outlets, but not more than that..

Don't get me wrong.. I do like my Thinkpads very much (and to a lesser extent the Thinkpad Edge models too) .. but "Ideapad" automagically translates into "cheapest consumer trash" in my head.
