    Is my seasonic M12 Dead

    Hello all,
So Friday I was installing an accelero twin turbo on my HD 4850 for my HTPC/gaming rig.
Everything was working fine, watched a bluray etc etc, all good.
Then I turn off the case, reroot some cable behind the new gpu cooler so they are not being bent and whatnot, tun the computer back on, and a flame burns up one of the resitors on the gpu just next to the pwm plug (I would have thought would have happened because of a short, but there were not damaged cables etc that I could see).

So I turn everything off, and take the gpu out, hoping nothing else has died, plug in my spare hd 6450 and the computer wont boot :

Buzzing noise from the vrm section of the mobo, and quick relay style ticking from the PSU. I tried to power on the comp with another psu, still no go (but no ticking sound this time, just the mobi vrm buzzing). So I'm pretty sure the mobo is dead.

Now the question is: is the psu dead too ? It's a five year old (just over warranty) M12 600 Watt PSU,. I tried to power it by disconnecting it completely from the mobo and connecting the green and black cable together with a paper clip, it powers the fan connected to a molex, but still does the clicking noise, which makes me think it is (probably a short somewhere activating the relay).

Oh, and I want to thank scan for doing saturday shipping now, I'll be getting my new gene-z monday !

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks

Well if you've got a multi meter and can jump start the psu, you could check the voltages.
    yellow wires are 12v
    red wires are 5v
    orange wires are 3.3v
    Black wires are earth

Sounds like you where unlucky and something spiked badly. (probably the 12v) an M12 shouldn't do anything like that and should shut itself down rather than fry components, but if the PWM chip in the psu got fried then bang goes all the safety. (PWM chip inside a psu controls the voltage and current regulation not just the fan)

Try opening up the psu, look for damage inside, scorching/burn mark and blown or leaking capacitors are a common indication of failier.

Thanks Pob25. Unfortunatly I havn't got a multimeter here. I'll try and see if I can borrow one from work.

Other than that, do you think that the TV tuner card I had on the pci express 1x slot got fried as well ? what about the ram and cpu, or is there no way to tell whithout testing? I will be able to test ram and tuner once my rig is rebuilt I guess, but I really loved that tv tuner

unfortunately not, unless there's visible signs, scorch marks or blown capacitors, then about the only real way is to plug it into a working system and see.

OK, I've rebuilt the system around a gene-z and 2500K, was kinda waiting for ivy bridge but never mind. The Tuner and ram seem fine.

I'l keep you posted when I get the voltage meter
