    Basic 500 - BP500U Question

I'm trying to use this psu as a tester to see if my other psu is bad. The mobo is an MSi Z68A-GD80 with an 8 pin connector for cpu power for LG1155 cpus. Would combining half of the 4 pin (2 blk & 2 yel/blk) with the 6 pin (blk & yel) for pci-e work for cpu power?

I don't think so, and I expect the connectors are keyed to prevent it anyway. Check the motherboard manual - sometimes you don't actually need to use all of the 8 pin EPS, just connecting to half of it might be fine.

    Re: Basic 500 - BP500U Question

Yes as kalniel said, you cannot plug the 6pin pci-e connector in as they are shaped not to allow it.
You could plug in any of the yellow cables and black cables into the 8pin socket, as long as the correct one goes in the correct pin slot (For all PSU wires, yellow are 12v and black are earth) stick the wrong wires into the wrong pins and you'll probably fry the motherboard.

However as Kalniel also said you don't need the full 8pin, it will work happily on a 4pin filling up half the socket.

the 8pin is really only needed for high overclocking and then it's more a matter of added current and voltage stability under load than it is about the total load.

Thanks for the help, 4 pin into 8 pin worked. Problem turned out to be one of my Corsair memory modules.
