Excuse the bump. I've been reading quite a lot about ID cards in recent weeks and I'll certainly be taking a stand against it.

At last, now with ID cards, the world is free from terror...all thanks to the brillance of the UK government.

Probably at least triple whatever the last figure the government quoted was, but a fair percentage of the cost will be hidden behind the government's usual spin and 'creative' accounting.

How much would it cost to build a 20 foot concrete wall around the UK with guarded exits at certain places?

I bet it would be cheaper than this fiasco

Re: ID card costs rise to £5.31bn

I was reading the Torygraph on-line yesterday and they were saying that because the National insurance database was so royally screwed and abused that an ID card system using that data would be worthless. So hopefully it will be unworkable.

just a new system, if they don't waste money here they'll only waste it elsewhere(like the NHS etc will ever get more money?).
However i quite condone the fingerprinting etc of young children etc for the eventual reduction of crime and catching of criminals (i feel anyone who rejects such schemes which put noone under pressure really are people who like to break the law but hate others to do so).

Well, I don't know about you but I have changed my mind and am now massively in favor of ID cards, what with all the giga-terror-bits out there. Something must be done!

Re: ID card costs rise to £5.31bn

"National identity cards will play an important part, a very important part in countering terrorism, there's no doubt about that," he said. "I mean, one can think of all sorts of reasons one might not like them, but actually, in terms of counter-terrorism, they will be extremely useful."

    lol

"Let's face it, 28 days is a long time. But we needed that... And the sheer complexity in terms of numbers of computers, the sort of giga-terror bits of information that need to be looked at... make us feel that maybe this needs to be longer.

    lol

yep, don't know about you but a flat statement that they 'will be extremely useful' is enough for me. There clearly is no need to actually describe how they will be useful at all.
