    Doesn't it worry you that...

The post powerful job in the world, the American presidency, is up for grabs & the decision about who does it is based on personality & not ability to do the job. In fact when you look at it, same goes for most political leaders. I just find the whole thing pretty scary.

Well every other job in the world usually requires some form of training, qualification or experience. Apart from running a country.

Judging by our own recent experience, it seems that basic competence isn't essential either.

if they had to vote in a person fit for the job they would struggle. No one in the US is fit for the job.

The fact that he is black may be one of the only reasons he is still in the running.
Alot of the black people in the USA would vote fr him, regardless of policy, just because of his colour.

From what i have seen, neither of the candidates would be any good.

I am no more worried about this election than previous. How would you measure a person's ability to do the job anyway, and how do you know that everyone is voting solely on personality? And is personality irrelevant when it comes to running a country?

It is a scary idea, and one which reminds me of a great Douglas Adams quote...

The major problem— one of the major problems, for there are several— one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.
On the other hand, whoever gets elected this time couldn't possible make a worse job of it than W...?

Re: Doesn't it worry you that...

I know its a choice between a doche and a turd, but Obama isn't a particularlly good choice, if it werent for McCain showing his 'true colours' in the way he chose his running mate, who i think we're all in total agreement isn't fit to run a school hockey team, let alone a state (plz, plz, let her be indited) then i'd of had to be tempted by McCain. Obama hasn't done anything to show he is experianced, or takes a stand on anything.

Its folly to think that a president makes a decision, he simply picks an option presented to him. Obama has one of the worst turn outs for voting as a senitor apparently (granted this could of just been slander) that I find worrying. He isn't a great man, a couple of flights to europe might of been more than the compition did, but he hasn't proven that he makes long term decisions. A leader should do that, even when they annoy people, or are wrong. If they don't risk that, they will never actually accomplish anything.

But i must admit i see why the police forces are planning for a riot if Obama dosen't win. But we must remeber its a douche and a turd sandwich, Obama is no panacia.

I agree, Obama will be a wuss of a president. But weighing up the choices, change is a good idea.

It's a bit like over here really... I'm hardly a Conservative but it's time to see the back of Labour.

Actually, your not quite right there OiD... The American Presidency hinges on another few things before that.

the candidates opinions on these three things

    1. is the candidate a christian? Yes = pro, No= con
    2. What is the candidates opinion on same sex marriages? As above, god says its wrong. If the candidate thinks its ok our survey says.... X

    3. What is the candidates opinion on abortion? as above; big no no.

these three things weigh very heavily, especially in the bible belt.

the racism thing, not so much but it does rear its head in places.

If the candidate ticks those boxes then next personality, and right at the bottom of the list is the policies of their respective political party.

What is more worrying to me is that for a country that claims to be the most civilised and liberal in the world it has some very outdated and I dare say backward social opinions and acceptances.

You do realise that the POTUS doesn't do everything single handedly. Quite frankly you could put a stuffed toy in the whitehouse and no one would know any differently. Same with the UK. Look at Belgium, they haven't had a working government for months yet they still manage. Policy may be thrashed out or dictated by the incumbents you vote for but government is run by the civil service or equivalent.
