    GTX280 shortage a worry?

    Hi,

Has anybody else noticed a severe lack of GTX280 at all online vendors?

I have a complete system from scan held up by a couple of these OC cards and wondering if there is something fishy going on or is it a simple component shortage of some sort or a design problem or even a new model to be released soon?
If anybody knows something with regards to the GTX280 and a reason to avoid please let me know before scan ships.

Also these overclocked versions, do they simply bench test them out high clock speeds and the ones that pass ship as the XXX or OC versions with stock fans and an updated bios? if so over time would these cards become less stable as card begins to age?

I have an XXX 8800GTX XFX card at the moment and its about 1 year old and im finding that the only way I can get my system stable is to down clock the card back to a standard 8800GTX speed, heat seems fine as I have checked.

If anybody has any info then I would be delighted.

    Thanks

    Steve.

I would get an Ati HD 4850 crossfire or a HD4070x2 if i were you, better prices and better performance.

nothing wrong with the GTX280 if you can find it cheap.

super high end cards are not produced in large numbers, I'd say Nvidia could be holding off production in favour of something else in the near horizon.

I have been building PCs for 15 years and feel that something is wrong! could it be the credit crunch hitting luxury goods such as these?

8 years ago I used to spend £2000 a year then in 2004 this went down to £800 a year and now this is the first new system in over 3 years so this maybe my last until 2014..lol wages in IT are terrible now where I live..lol

The 4870x2 seems a mighty fine piece of kit but it wont fit in my 790i board in crossfire..

The 4870x2 doesnt require crossfire, its 2 chips on one board

Or, Nvidia are not wanting to produce many any more as ATI's 4870 and 4870x2 are stealing all the sales.

Unless you have to have SLi, there is no reason why you'd choose a GTX280 over an 4870x2

I would get a HD4870x2 any day, more performance and even if thats not enough, bragging rights and the possibility of quad xfire.

Have ATi still not implemented that power saving function which lowers the clocks and power usage of the GPU when idle? They said it'd lower power consumption to like 20W or something?

I have seen the 4870x2 in action and I must say its a fine card.

I have now cancelled my order for the 2 x GTX280 with scan and managed to get a couple of BFG GTX280 OC from another supplier which has allowed the rest of my order with scan to become unblocked and will now be despatched..yay.

I need to go SLI as my board does not support Quad 4870x2 which is a shame as these cards are great.
I have a 30inch monitor and this is why want duel cards.

If the GTX280 gives me grief then I will switch, does anybody have these things running in SLI stable? if so is there a big increase with regards to heat or this so called microstutter?

    Cheers

    Steve.

    Since when did a 4850 outpace a GTX280????? Errr...Never.

I do agree slightly with one of your points (almost).

Rather than 2 x 280's, i would go with 2 x ATI4870x2 ......Thats for all intents and purposes 4 4870's and would be amazingly quick (and cheaper).
I run 2 x 4870's in Crossfire atm and its blistering.

The 55nm shrink will be out before too long, probably called the 290.
