No, it goes into the pockets of the big businesses that the government has contracted most of their work out to.

    Almost zero.

Now imagine how much a camera (Not just your average digicam, a high res one, that can see in the dark AND read number plates, which is quite new and powerful, so I expect exspensive technology) above every single carridgeway (Thats 6 per 1/4 mile) on every single motorway in the country will cost?

Millions, and quite a lot of them, imagine that money being plowed into renewable energy, your forgetting the stupid amounts of CO2 coal power gives off, even if coal power was reduced by 1% in a year, and that was made from renewable power it would be loads better for the environment than restricting speeds anyway.

Also the majority (me and my family, all my friends, all the people I know) stick to the speed limit on the motorway, why would I want a lorry going into me as I raz it up the right lane at 100? Why would I waste more petrol considering the prices? Why would I endanger the life of me and my family just to save myself 2 minutes of my journey.

who came up with ever 1/4 mile? iw oudl think it would come up every junction

i'd be interested to see if htey could use similar technology (i know they could, but will they) to check tailgating.. with that many cameras - if someone is tailgating, say 3 cameras in a row, you know they do it all the time.. with 1 camera, it could be the guy in front just cut in.. i bet they wont do it, but they could, and imo, THAT would lead to a massive reduction in accidents

Dude its being trialled on the M42 right by my house, I go up it all the time and it is every 1/4 of a mile, who came up with it? someone in the government who wanted to waste some cash I presume. I drove down it last night and there every quarter of a mile, you can tell by the speed lines either side of the road, and there above every lane (4 i think) so thats 8 every 1/4 mile, you can easily go past 50 cams on both sides in a couple of minutes, its overkill, and bloody annoying.

the speed lines are just to scare you - a simple cheap way of making people slow down..

these cameras wouldnt need those lines.

Ill look next time Im down there then, I agree, the lines do scare you as there are a couple by me with lines and no cameras and people do slow down - I think they should do more like this, to warn people, but not to 'tax' people.

If this took off I really would consider vandalising the cameras. Ultimately, there has to come a point where you stand up and fight for what you believe in, and for me it's when the government can track the movement of every motorway driver to the nearest 400 yards. Police state? No thanks.

Rave I agree with you there mate, its not criminal damage its civil disobedience I say!

also Sware, the amount of CO2 emitted by building those caeras is certainly not zero, not unless you know a way to process ore that doesnt emit CO2.

I said almost zero, the production of cameras would create CO2 but also the work men driving all along all the motorways in there dirty diesal munching cranes putting them up too, it will be quite substantially less than the apparently 1M tons thatll be saved, but it wont work out to much of a saving, due the amount of cameras being put up

    The point being that,
a this isnt an environmental issue
b You can already be tracked on the motorway anyway
c you can be tracked around most town centres if someone so feels like it.
d youre in public, you have no reasonable expectation to privacy (at least not in the sense you mean), whats to stop someone just getting in their car and following you? THey have every legal right to do so, its the exact same thing.

    How?

Not in a way that automatically identifies who you are. If you're a known thief or whatever then they'll recognise you, but there's no way that someone could identify me unless they knew me personally.

Actually if they did it continually you would be able to get a retraining order put on them on the grounds that they were causing you alarm and distress. It would effectively be stalking, and that can be dealt with.

What if I disagree with what the money is being spent on? If I have that money I can spend it on myself and my family the way i see fit. If the government have it they can do whatever they want with it. Yes theoretically it could go to the right cause, but it could just as easilly go towards something useless and wasteful.

As for winging - if everyone will stop voicing their opinions and objections then saddams Iraq will seem like a viable alternative by comparison.

well you have 3 options if you dislike what the government is doing.

    1) vote. nice and simple.

    2) leave the country, live somewhere where you agree with what they do

    3) winge

    most people choose 3.

We are probably more lienient than most - in the regards of fines etc. Btw can't remember who said bout points, its £18 for all of em from what I've read (I had to send my licence off to get it migrated to a full one - the cost is on teh same form). The £18 is jus an admin charge, it approximates what it probably costs them in labour & mail etc. The money we get fined etc does get back to us - economists here will know about the multiplier effect. This basically says that if government spending increases, we feel the benifit through it being respent = more money for us anyhoo for those that never studied economics, ah well, I'm no teacher

I would choose 1, but can you see any government coming into power and chopping down their yellow moneyspinners just to make me the voter happy? And I think number 2 is a little extreme for a 60 quid fine.
