The war in Iraq - 3 years on...

Tomorrow is the 3rd anniversary of the Iraq war. Parts of Iraq are currently under a sustained assault, the heaviest since the initial invasion. Tomorrow will also see 200 demonstrations around the world to try and bring an end to the war in Iraq and to oppose the possible imminent invasion of Iran.

My views are generally known on here. I oppose all violence: deaths caused by soldiers in uniform or deaths caused by insurgents of any kind.

    What are your thoughts?

Lots of people, probably including most governemtns, would like to bring the war to an end. But what do all these demonstrators think we should do? Just walk away and abandon the people?

I have to say i agree with teepee, we might have been better not going to war in the first place, but now its done it needs finishing. All these protestors kind of annoy me in that they dont seem to recognise that key point. Lots of people would be a lot worse off without the troops there.

And loth as i am to say it, the intentions (or at least the stated ones, i.e. removing saddam hussien) was a good one, it was just executed incredibly poorly

I'm afraid that once stepped over the border we had a duty to the Iraqi people. We can't simply walk away from it now we are for the duration. To leave now would cause a full blown civil war and much wider bloodshed.

As for the Iranians we will either see another revolution where the mad mullahs and their president are removed by ordinary Iranian people or America will target every military and nuclear facility the Iranians have and reduce the power base to rubble (and rightly so imho)

Fair enough, and im inclined to agree with him, however, the point that theres still a duty to finish what was started is there. AS soon as it is reasonably possible we should withdraw, anything prior to that will just turn iraq into something resembling the west bank, but probably more violent.
