    ahhhh the voice of youth.

you can get a young persons rail card, then you get the "not an adult" discount.

The train fair rises have been an interesting topic today, more so with rail track announcing profit for the first time....and of £700 million, not bad.

£2 for a bus journey is reasonable price to pay considering the cost of a drive for most journeys, petrol + parking, but thats paying for the convenience.

Although there is outrage for the trains at the moment, my last regular commute to London, I used to get a first class seasons ticket costin £890 per month, I couldn't have done london for 2 weeks in the car for that price, plus the journey time was half and I got all zones tube and bus once in London.

I think you have to look at whats best for you in the longer term. A one of trip for me on the bus I'd probably think "gutted" that it cost £2 but no big deal, then I'd smile realising how much a taxi would cost.

If you're using the bus/train on a regular basis, there are many discounts/cards available.

Don't slate it so easy. Public transport has MANY faults, but a lot of the grumbles are from people who don't bother to get the right setup/discounts for what they need.
    It is Inevitable.....

Of course that is an operating profit, and not something to has to be dished out to it's shareholders. So that £700million gets invested back into the rail system, along with however many million the government is going to add to that.

All this is needed, and a lot more, if the predicted passenger increase is anywhere near being close.

Beer Prices - Your having a giraffe! ( plus it's watered down way too much )

House Prices - How much for a rotten, damp shed again?

Food - probably about average really.
Beer Prices, while my student £1 a pint days are gone, its very possible to pay only £2.50 for a GOOD BEER. There are some brilliant bars unrivealed by anywhere else in the UK in london, i'd recomend the belgian bar inbetween clarkenwell & farringdon for a good mid week drink + pint of chips.

house prices, shed's are in the garden, i wish i could see garden. But seriously, i get paid about 3 times as much as if i was outside london, plus can always commute if i want countryside.

Food, truely fantastic multicultural smorgasboard on offer. Where else can you get really rather good chinease for £4 buffet, and only down the road get kobi beef that you'll be hard pressed to match anywhere else in the UK. Even fast food, where did wagamama's start? The ivey, the ritz and the lahore kebab house (v good, cheap and only a 10 min walk from the city).

Transport, try living in cornwall. Oh boo hoo i had to wait 10 minuites for a tube today, when every other day this month its been 1min wait. Damn lifes hard.

Ok, so its expensive, but £1 a bus ride (oyster) with automatic cap (pay no more than a travel card) is great. Now a common complaint is that paris it only cost about £40 a month for unlimited travel (peak) in the uk, its more like £90. Now, when you think paris has a terrible economy (what happens when you let the socalisits run the country ) a much smaller transport network. So how come ours costs more, surely more people, more stops, more trains should mean less waste more profit? Not double the costs?

An oyster card is a £3 deposit that you get back when you hand it back. how can that be expensive? you load it up and top it up like a mobile phone... Using it gets you half price fares... on the tube and bus, I don't see how it can be expensive. it sits in your wallet next to your debit card until you need it.

I hate to say it, but A LOT of the country's bus ticketing is going the same way... http://www.itso.org.uk/default.asp?ContentID=55 (Look in Funkstars post for the wikipedia link) so I think it's about right that they get the whole country onto one standard. ITSO is an independent organisation working for the standardisation of smart cards for transport. It's nothing to do with the government, they're actually trying to make it easier for us to travel around our country... it's just the standard didn't exist when oyster was introduced... BUT they will do eventually.

Well I thought people would have realized by now that every time that fuel prices go up so does the buses and every thing else

Well the last time I used a bus was months ago but even then it cost just over £3 return ticket.

It's been said - get an oyster card and it's £1. There is absolutely no reason to complain.

£2 seems reasonable to me, a return ticket from here to Aberdeen is £7.20, but then that is a longer bus journey.

I'm in Aberdeen a fair bit now im at uni, but it doesn't cost me £7.20 per day, thanks to my Unirider pass, which makes it far cheaper for me, and makes buses a far more attractive option (as does the fact that I can't drive )

There are similar bus tickets available up here, like unirider, but for non-uni/college folks, that offer similar (perhaps not such good, i'm not sure) value for money, so if research is done, public transport can be quite affordable

My Unirider is £160 for a 13wk pass, which works out at £1.76 a day IIRC, which is a hell of a lot better than £7.20 a day!

    simple solution.... get one

Even if you view the deposit as non refundable it'll pay for itself in 3 journeys. Surely thats not too much to ask ?

i have a student oyster, which means i can only get weekly or monthly tickets, so wen im not at uni its not worth me getting 1. hence i have to pay the normal rate for single rides to work etc.

Surely you can still put pay-as-you-go cash on a student oyster card? I though the only restriction was that you can't buy annual season tickets?

As has been said before, if you know you're going to make more than 3 random trips, you'd be better off buying a second (ordinary) oyster.

Railtrack doesn't exist anymore, it's now Network Rail, and it is very much Not the same thing. It's not for profit, so as Funkstar said these profits are a good thing for the railways.

Ditto stytagm for the Oyster twiglet.

It is a lot, but as the TFL marketing hype states:

I'm not a Londoner but often stay overnight so getting a Return Travelcard for Zones 1 and 2 on my Young Persons Railcard is not viable. I use and love Oyster - to all those without one, get one as four pounds for a single tube journey is taking the piss. Ordered mine on the TFL site and got it a few days later.

When I'm in London, I use public transport a great deal. What really annoys me is the under-16s London residents free bus travel. I want it too, I'm in full time education, don't have a job etc. why are Londoners differently priced!?

maybe they try to make up their under 16 losses by charging those over 16 larger amounts
