First build - what do you think?

Hi guys, my first build so can you take a look and give me your opinions please?

    Build:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/savedbasket/43...9a98399b40afdd

My budget is £1000 and its basically going to be a jack of all trades PC. Some gaming, some work, some photoshop / video editing.

This was put together after a few weeks research. Will this be overclockable and has anyone got any videos / instructions on how to overlock with this card/mobo combo?

Hopefully that windows comes with a CD also - not sure what the OEM comes with.

Will i also need to buy anymore cables etc. as I noticed my hard-drive is also OEM.

Decided not to go with an SSD for price reasons - will it be easy enough to add one at a later date and transfer OS etc. too it?

    Kind regards,

    Kev

The Core i5 2500K can be had for under £160 and should be able to hit higher overclocks with the air cooler you suggest. If you only intend a more minor overclock, then it should hopefully suffice.

Apart from that it looks a decent build overall. I assume you are going to overclock the HD7850 2GB??

Tbh dude the whole overclocking thing i dont't know much about. Building pcs is new to me.

I'd prefer ivy bridge just because its a new part over sandybridge. Is the cooler not suffiient?

I plan on overclocking everything possible at some date, including the graphics - will look into it once the pc is built. Overloaded with information already lol

Re: First build - what do you think?

Looks like a good build to me. If you have a few spare quid it would be worth getting a better cooler and OC the thing. Like this
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/be-qu...us-am3-754-940
No problem to transfer to a SSD anytime later, and overclocking the GPU through CCC is so easy even I can do it.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    CCC?

Is that cooler not good enough to overclock then? Trying my best to stay within £1000 as i need a mouse and keyboard ( will probs pick a cheap one up so didnt include in build )

As for the SSD im tempted now to buy a 128Gb M4 and then add a traditional hdd at a later date. Easier that way i think.

Catalyst Control Centre, the software built in with the ATI driver. It has simple sliders for the Core and Mem frequencies.
the Gelid is OK, it's just the Dark Rock is better.
If you're not pushed for space then get the M4 and a HDD later.

Re: First build - what do you think?

Ok thanks for the advice dude. Cant push to the dark rock but do you think the CM hyper 212 is better than the gelid? See alot of reviews for it and its in the same price range. Ive read that the gelid is quieter however.

Good stuff about how easy the OC is, the cpu just as easy? Is the software clever enough to automatically know the max due to coolers i have etc. so i dont frazzle anything?

I think its strange the way overclocking is possible - makes more sense to me for the company to do it themselves to improve their products.

I'd agree on the cooler. The Hyper is better but noiser.

The difference is price is so small though. Can you not shave something else off ?

Re: First build - what do you think?

I think the problem is i dont know how much i can get out of the cpu, gpu, ram Etc. so cant justify paying extra on a more expensive cooling system.

As long as ive got a decent system for a first build that will last a few years im happy. Maybe i can replace the cpu cooler at a later stage? Would it be easy in terms of thermal paste? Im not sure if it dries hard etc so might be a pain to clean off the cpu to put some new paste on for a new cooler.

Am i looking at a decent overclocking possibility with the current ram/gpu/cpu?

Scan does special offers,so I will check this webpage:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/index.aspx

Also,if any parts are not in stock the whole order will be not sent until stock arrives.

Remember the Core i5 2500K is over £15 cheaper:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Sandyb.../dp/B004FA8NX2

Thanks dude, but i want this system to last as long as possible so would rather buy newer parts e.g. ivybridge over sandybridge.

I noticed my Ram and GPU isn't in stock, and the GPU doesn't even have a date so might have to hold on before purchasing it.

Re: First build - what do you think?

Its worth noting many of the parts you have picked are on Scans weekend today only, you could easily shave about another £20 off the build, also order your OS from Amazon its a fiver cheaper.

Overclockers have the GPU you want in stock but you would have to pay £9 delivery, you could also change the ram to XMS 3 stuff if you wanted to get it finished and shipped.

You do realise when it comes to overclocking,a Core i5 2500K will overclock more than a Core i5 3570K with cheaper cooling?? It also means the performance difference is negligible. Ivy Bridge runs hot when pushed unlike Sandy Bridge.

For gaming a Core i5 2500K and Core i5 3570K perform more or less the same at stock clockspeeds.

Will overclock more yes, but ivybridge has 22nm - cant reach such high frequencies as sandybridge but that doesn't mean it's slower than sandy bridge. CPC increases ivybridge and it's new architecture means it's a faster part to sandy bridge at stock so doesn't need to overclock as much.

That's my understanding anyhow - Could be wrong like as i'm new to this.
