Hi, all
I've build my last rig some six years ago (scary thought!). For the last three years, I've been using a desktop replacement notebook (Acer Aspire 8930G), which has sadly come to the end of its useful life, if only due to lack of viable graphic card upgrade options.
I've finally decided to come back to the desktop PC solution, with an underlying objective being 1080p gaming (D3, LoL, RPGs) and the usual assortment of multimedia. The PC will be located in the corner of the living room (damn you, London property prices), so the form factor and overall impact is very important (hence, mATX build).
Without further ado, here is the proposed build (everything is being replaced):
CPU:
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache OEM Processor £165.93
(to be OCed)
Cooling:
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 £14.57
Motherboard:
ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M Desktop Motherboard - Intel Z77 Express Chipset £87.38
Video:
Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon 7850 860MHz 2GB PCI-Express 3.0 HDMI £179.98
(to be OCed)
RAM:
8GB Kingston Hyper X Red Limited Edition DDR3 1600Mhz Kit £33.02
HDD:
Seagate Barracuda© Green SATA 6Gb/s 2TB Hard Drive ST2000DL003 £82.00
(I'll be reusing my 2.5" Seagate Momentus XT as a speedier system drive)
ODD:
Samsung SH-B123L - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM / BD-ROM drive Retail £44.98
Card reader:
Akasa AK-ICR-07U3 £10.99
Wireless:
TP-Link Wireless-N150 PCIe card £9.48
PSU:
OCZ ZT series ATX12V & EPS12V Power Supply - 85% Efficiency - 650 W £64.08
Case:
Fractal Design Arc Mini £54.99
Monitor:
Dell UltraSharp U2312HM 23" Widescreen IPS LED Monitor - Black £159.95
Keyboard & mouse:
Logitech Wireless Combo MK520 £37.50
Speakers:
Hercules XPS 2.1 40 Slim £34.86
(or similarly priced Logitech Z323 2.1)
Surge protector:
Belkin 8-Outlet Concealed Surge Protector £20.98
(to hide those cables from the missus and the toddler)
A total of £1,000.69 (it's amazing what a grand can buy these days in terms of hardware, if you shop around).
Ironically, the case and the speakers are giving me the biggest trouble (the release of IvyBridge and new Radeons seem to have made things easy in the performance hardware department). I have no doubts Arc Mini is a wonderful case, but it's still a mini tower. I was hoping to get one of the cube cases, but the only one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is Silverstone Sugo SG02B. Thoughts?
Speakers present a problem due to additional cable clutter. What I really need is wireless, USB-powered satellites and a subwoofer I can put on / next to the case. Is there such thing in existence. Failing that, has anyone tried one of these laptop soundbar speakers, e.g. Logitech Laptop Speaker Z305? I have a pair of very nice and expensive Bose headphones (a present), which I'll be using most of the time, but I still want some decent sound output for those other occasions.
Obviously, any criticism on other parts and things I might have missed are very welcome.
Thanks.
