    Question FX 8350 My Rig

    AMD FX X8 8350 Soket AM3+ 4.0 GHz 16MB Cache 32nn
    ASUS Crosshair IV Extreme AMD 890FX/SB850 AM3 DDR3 2133 (O.C)
    GSKILL 16GB (2x8GB) RipjawsX DDR3 2133MHz CL9 1.5V
    XFX HD7970 Black Edition O.C. GDDR5 3GB 384Bit AMD Radeon DX11.1
    Intel 330 Series SSD / Kingston 3K
COOLER MASTER HAF 912 PLUS GX 80PLUS 750W MidT ATX
    SEAGATE 3,5" 2TB BARRACUDA SATA 3.0 64MB CACHE 7200RPM
    ASUS 20" VS209N IPS-LED MONITOR

    Probably: Corsair H100 CPU Cooler.

I've heard that ASUS motherboards has issues with AMD cpus. Was this really the case? Or can I comfortably buy an ASUS AM3+ AMD motherboard? Also, what do you think about the general layout of the rig?

    Thanks a lot.

What is your total budget?? What games are you playing?? Have you considered the Intel alternatives?? I would note for high end dual cards,I would probably go for an Intel system or in instances you are playing games which are based on ancient engines(use only one or two threads).

I've got 2 Asus based AM3+ systems and my brother also has a similar combo. No problems with Asus boards and AM3+ CPUs here and none that I am aware of.

But for high-end gaming....some games really do benefit from an Intel.

Also, unless you are running virtual machines and/or extremely large Photoshop files, I wouldn't waste money on 16GB RAM.

I'm running the FX8350 on an ASUS motherboard, granted it's a new one but every ASUS i have owned has been solid.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

Thank again guys. I need the 16GB since I am learning applications like Adobe Premier and After Affects. I won't be playing many games but I just love that XFX 7970 OC edition. It kills me and I want that bad-ass card. I have considered the Intel alternative but like a good motherboard costs more whereas you can buy a decent amd motherboard for cheaper and of course the cpu. I would be doing rendering and projects from Sony Vegas Pro and just transferring large junks of files around the system. My budget is around 1200 dollars. BTW, I am playing Aliens vs. Predator 2010 PC, will be playing FAR cry and probably Black OPS 2.

For example, for a better performance and price, which of the following should I get?

    Intel 3770K (319$)
    ASUS Maximus V Gene LGA 1155 Intel Z77 (200$)

    OR.

    AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz (219$)
ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard (200$)

I would save 120$ for the AMD platform. I would still go with amd if I lose like 20% performance wise. What do you think guys?
In what ways would the Intel system above would be better than the amd system?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

You can go for a cheaper motherboard and what retailers are you looking at??

AFAIK,Microcentre do some excellent deals, especially with Intel CPUs.

BTW,I assume you mean video encoding and editing, not rendering? I would expect the Intel Core i7 to be faster overall TBH,although the FX8350 is no slouch either IMHO.

Toms Hardware unlike many websites seems to be using CS6,so these benchmarks should be relevant to you:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ew,3328-9.html

I will see if I can find some for you,so you can decide what looks a better mix of performance overall for your budget.

The other thing is: I couldn't find any AMD motherboards which support PCI-E 3.0?

There is no PCI-E 3.0 available on the current AMD platforms. OTH,remember that most people on socket 1155,have no PCI-E 3.0 either unless they are on Ivy Bridge,so whether it is important or not ATM is up to you to consider.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

I am going to buy the following system very soon. Any comments / problems with the overall stability.

    AMD FX X8 8350 Socket AM3+ 4.0GHz 16MB Cache 32nn
    ASUS Crosshair V Formula AMD 990FX/SB950 AM3+ DDR3 2133MHz (O.C.)

    GSKILL 16GB (2x8GB) Trident X DDR3 2133MHz CL9 1,65V
    2x - Raid-0 Kingston SSDNow V+200 KR-S3120-3H 2.5" 120GB (I already have these)
    XFX R7750 1GB GDDR5 128bit Graphics Card (I already have this too)

    ASUS 20" VS209N IPS-LED Monitor
COOLER MASTER HYPER 612S LGA CPU Cooler

    Thanks in advance.

I don't need any Hard Drives. I have plenty. I have mouse and keyboard and optical drives.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

1000W PSU is massive overkill, you would be better off getting a good quality 400-500w PSU from Corsair/Seasonic/Enermax/etc.

If you're worried 400w won't be enough - don't. I currently have a GTX 480, couple of HDDs, and an Intel i5 3400 running off a 500w PSU and using a power monitor it's pulling about 300w under absolute max load.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

Linustechtips and Tek Syndicate suggests 650W 80 Plus for FX 8350 and since I will be doing 2xcrossfireX in the future, I think 750W would be enough right? Or should I get 850W?

The crossfirex will be 2 XFX 7970s.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

Legitreviews shows around 650w power consumption for their whole test system with 2x7970s

Techpowerup shows 525w power consumption for just the cards

Depending on how many HDDs, if you will be overclocking, etc it might be worth getting an 850w unit. You could look at the XFX Pro Series 850w PSU, I've had good experiences with the lower wattage models and it gets a good review at jonnyguru.com

EDIT: If you're after modular you could also look at the XFX XXX Edition which seems to get fairly good reviews. I've only ever used PSUs with a wattage under 600w though so you may want to have a look around for reviews and availability.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

    Thanks Daniel.

Yes, let me specify the system.

3xSSDs (they don't consume anything anyway).
    4 HDDs, each 2TB 7200rpm drives.
Overclocking will be done around 4.4/4.5Ghz
and finally 2x 7970s will be installed (in the future, in 6months time). I do not wish to change the PSU for that.
    and 1 optical drive.

So, you're saying with all of these installed and configured, 850w is more than enough?

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

I assume you are replacing the HD7750 at some point?? Are you in the US??

I would probably stick to one HD7970 TBH,especially at your monitor resolution. Replace it next year with an HD8970 eventually.

    Edit!!

For the modelling steps, before rendering I would expect a Core i7 to be better but at added cost, although Micro Center has some good deals ATM.

    Re: FX 8350 My Rig

It seems the Corsaid 400R has some slight issues with mounting one an H100 if you have a Asus 990FX motherboard:

    http://www.overclock.net/t/1023100/o...read-club/2390

The main issue is that the 8 pin power connector for the Asus motherboards is too high up.

OTH,the 400R and 500R have no issues with the Gigabyte UD5 and UD7 it appears:

    http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0135FA7B16838A76

    http://www.overclock.net/t/1023100/o...read-club/2390

    Edit!!

It appears the Gigabyte motherboards might have patchy LLC support so the Asus motherboards appear better for overclocking.
