    Matx System

Hi, i've been out of the loop for a while and would like some advice, i am looking to build an Matx system

    Processor
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel...e-32x-ratio-77

    Motherboard
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-h...vi-d-micro-atx

    Ram
    8GB Corsair Vengeance LP

    GPU
I was looking to use the On-Chip GPU on the Intel processor for the time being, would also like to make sure the above motherboard will enable the On-Chip GPU. I have a spare 6870 that i may use later.

    Case
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/silve...-black-w-o-psu Will this case be ok with a 6870.

    PSU
    Corsair VX550 ATX

I would like confirmation that all of the above will fit into the Sugo, and that all the items are compatible e.g. the Mobo and Processor, i won't be overclocking this system.

    All help/advice appreciated

looks fine, have you considered an FX6300 and 760g matx motherboard as an alternative?

    Re: Matx System

Hi Pob, i didn't even consider an AMD processor tbh, i am replacing a early i5 750, was just going to replace like for like with another intel but i'll take a look at the FX and 760G, Thanks

I assume the AMD doesn't have the On-Chip GPU that the Intel has? This was a key feature for me until i am ready to use a separate GPU.

The 760G has onboard graphics (old-style motherboard IGP ), so you're good on that What are the main uses?

    Re: Matx System

I find the SG02 is great in my daughter's socket FM2 system (no graphics card) but my wife's system with a 6770 gpu struggles with airflow and gets a tad loud.

So it should fit, but may not be quiet.

Edit to add: for my definition of quiet, I admit I am a bit fussy.

Internet and later for gaming, i want to build the rig for the time being using onboard gpu until i have taken apart a 6870 i have which is covered in dust.

I was going to use it with the cover off, so that should help a bit.

I'm currently running an i5 750, will the FX processor and 760G mobo be much of an upgrade?

    Re: Matx System

Ahh that's harder, depends if you're overclocking or not, at stock settings the FX6300 is a bit better, pushed to 3ghz the old i5 750 pretty much equals it (I think)
The old i5 750 is a really solid cpu esp when overclocked.

The 760g & fx6300 would be more than enough for web browsing, you'd need to add in a graphics card for gaming as the onboard IGP isn't going to cut it.
The FX series are not that good gaming wise atm mainly because games still don't thread that well and the use of floating point processes (the fx6300 is made up of 3 modules, each having two cores and one shared floating point unit)

The fx6300 is a good price vs performance upgrade from and old c2d or am2+ system, but the i5 750 was a decent cpu esp when overclocked, I've always found fsb overclocking to have more impact on apparent performance than multiplier overclocking, I think it reduces overall latencies more.

Are you just looking for a smaller system?

Basically, i think my processor has outlived a 2nd motherboard, so i decided i could switch to a 1155 setup and get a bit of extra performance.

As i said earlier i have a 6870 i'll add later, i just want to use it with Onchip GPU for the time being until i get round to taking apart and thoroughly cleaning my GPU, i think my best bet is to upgrade to something like an I5 3330, with the above MSI motherboard, i'm sure i should see some improvement.

I've also semi decided on a Fractal Core 1000 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/fract...et-fan-w-o-psu will i have any issues with the stock Intel cooler fitting or the 6870? I assume not.

    Ps. Just ordered:

    Fractal Design Core 1000 Black
Intel Core i5 3470,1155, Ivy Bridge
    MSI H77MA-G43, Intel H77, S 1155

Swap the core 1000 for the ace ecco 250 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ace-e...oofing-w-o-psu it's the same basic layout but with two removable hard drive mounting rail things, extra width which allows for a larger cpu cooler and rear 120mm fan and sound damping foam pre fitted.
Ulti used one so you can ask him about it if you want more info http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/...ld-review.html

Well in terms of performance the old 750 isn't bad, in terms of a new motherboard, I'd agree, mainly because socket 1156 are thin on the ground now and hard to get hold of, not worth spending the money on it if you want to go smaller.

    Re: Matx System

Its been a hassle the last couple of weeks, i have had random reboots which i have narrowed down to the Intel Processor Graphics Driver, basically the Onchip GPU that i am intending to use does not work with its own driver, it randomly crashed when under load, not under load, when im doing nothing, sometimes it won't boot into Windows at all and goes into endless loop mode where it reboots and tries and reboots and tries.

I am not happy to say the least that i cannot use the one feature i upgraded from my 1st gen i5 for, the Onchip GPU, i really do not know how to solve this issue.

    i5 3470 with Intel HD 2500 Graphics.

    Any help will be appreciated!

It sounds like a duff and/or overheating chip, have you checked the temperature?

Guess it could also be a lack of voltage....over even a BIOS update.

Chip is fine, no overheating, wouldn't really explain why it also happens under zero load, would it?

Also checked the voltages which have all been fine, i have updated the motherboard bios, the issue was there before and is still here.

At this point i might have solved it, i installed SP1 then tried several versions of the driver, i am currently using the oldest version and it hasn't crashed yet, fingers crossed.

I haven't used Intel graphics for a few years, from exactly this sort of driver problem. Would have hoped they would have fixed it by now. Works fine for most software, sometimes just dies. Trying to use it in Linux used to be dire.

My solution is to plug in the cheapest graphics card I can find. Something like this, assuming it has the right video connector for you:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-e...ink-dvi-i-hdmi

I'll be honest, its been a few years since i used onboard graphics and i was certain by now they would have ironed out issues like this, perhaps not.

I did consider a separate gpu, but the OnChip gpu is really one of the main reasons i upgraded and downgraded from using a 6870. I have now managed to sort the issue, i tried several versions of the driver with/out SP1 and in different installation orders and seemed to have it sorted now, but for the future i'll likely consider another cheaper GPU.
