First build in a few years

    HI guys,

Just wondering if someone could have a look at this and let me know if I'm splurging my money wisely please

I'm thinking of upgrading from an i5 760 with 8GB Mushkin 1333MHz RAM, a Zotac AMP! GTX 460 (1GB) and Samsung 830 256GB SSD in a Lian Li B25B case to the following (the only part I've bought so far is the replacement gfx card, but I'm looking to buy the rest today or tomorrow):

    Intel i5 4670K
    MSI Z87i Gaming AC mo'bo
*Keeping the 8GB Mushkin RAM (not sure how much value I'll get from getting faster RAM considering my needs)
MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr (2GB) - already bought
Samsung EVO 840 250GB SSD (in addition to the 830 I already have)
500GB Samsung 7200rpm drive for further storage (already owned)
    Corsair H100i cooler
Bitfenix Prodigy (I'll also get a windowed side panel and some LEDs for the inside)

I'm mainly going to be gaming (pretty much everything except for FPS games) but also as I'm a musician I'll be getting an external interface (at a later stage) to hook my guitar up to for recording. And I wanted all of this in a nice compact case hehe!

Will this build be enough for my needs? Is it overkill? Is it underkill?

    Thanks

Oh I forgot to mention - PSU-wise I've got an Antec TruePower 650w already so I guess I'll keep onto that (assuming it'll fit into the Prodigy)!

Seems like a fairly solid build to be fair, whats your budget like?

Re: First build in a few years

Haha as little as possible, as I say I've already bought the graphics card so at least that's out of the way!
But I guess I'd really like to spend as for under £600 as possible on the below parts.

    Intel i5 4670K
    MSI Z87i Gaming AC mo'bo
    Samsung EVO 840 250GB SSD
    Corsair H100i cooler
    Bitfenix Prodigy

Re: First build in a few years

Im pretty sure you could get all of the components for >£600 is your PSU 80+ efficiency?

Have you also checked whether the h100i will fit inside the case? i understand its a mini-itx case

also are you going to be overclocking your CPU?

Re: First build in a few years

Yup, the PSU is 80+ I'm glad you mentioned that as I hadn't checked it out before now!

From what I've read, the H100i will fit, but I'll lose the optical bay, which isn't really a big issue for me to be honest.

As for overclocking, I've not dabbled with it before, but I have been toying with the idea, I might give it a go which is why I was considering the 4670K in conjunction with the H100i (Apparently the non-K haswell chips can't be overclocked)

Re: First build in a few years

Good :-) glad you've researched your stuff saves me alot of typing

I see no problems with this build what so ever, if anything it makes me jealous on how bad mine is all i have to say is; if you're not gonna overclock id go for a cheaper air cpu cooler and a i5 without the K

    Haha cheers goodZE!

Your system looks pretty good to me, and running at 4.5GHz too - very nice!

Re: First build in a few years

The only thing I'd question is the 2nd ssd.
single 256gb ssd should be plenty, a larger hard drive for more storage or a 2nd hard drive as well as the 500gb is what I'd go for.

ether 1 or 2 tb drive, I'd then set it up as follows
256bg SSD = OS and other key software
500gb hdd = games and less used software
1tb or 2tb = storage (eg music, video and such)

Re: First build in a few years

If you are on a budget I would swap the H100i with a decent air cooler.
The H100i is unlikely to make any real difference when OCing, even if it does grant you an extra 100mhz or so the chances of you noticing it in actual use are remote.
