Recomended PSU and opinions for this build.

Putting a system together that will be used for a bit of all gaming, Media Work and I intend to overclock in the future once I see a need for it.

No need for a OS copy and reusing GPU, HDD, CPU cooler, Monitor or any other peripherals.

    CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor £244.94
    Motherboard: Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard £106.98
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory £124.99
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 ATX Mid Tower Case £80.48

SSD: Crucial MX100 512GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Already purchased For £119.00

Prices are a rough estimation and it comes to around £700, although I have no problems increasing it to £800 if suggested other parts.

Any comments would be appreciated, and for around £60 which PSU/manufacturers would you recommend?

    Thanks in advance

Seems pretty good, if you plan to make use of the extra threads the 4790K gives you. You could get away with 8Gb of RAM, but for media work 16Gb would be fine. Which PSU will you be using? Are you planning to update your GTX 560 Ti at a later date?

Spot on, barely play anything at the moment so I would rather buy a better model when I do find the time to use it.

Will be buying a PSU but I have no idea regarding the model, manufacturers reputation is particularly important and I cant say I have been paying much attention to the market.

So preferably something modular and with good overhead for a powerful GPU (£300 or so range) and any other future upgrades, so really any recommendations would be helpful.

Unless your current psu has died it should still be fine . . . hang on, is that the old dual fan one? if so that must be near 10years old, probably best to replace it.

This should be good http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-...et-fan-atx-psu (also one of the enermax psu's still made by enermax)

Others the XFX (seasonic made) http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-...mm-atx-v22-psu
    Seasonic M12II http://www.scan.co.uk/products/520w-...bronze-atx-psu
This coolermaster shouldn't be bad ether http://www.scan.co.uk/products/620w-...silver-atx-psu (I think that's made by enhance electronics, which is a good make)

Re: Recomended PSU and opinions for this build.

As Pob255 recommends, Seasonic or Seasonic OEM PSUs (like XFX) would be my first choice, but there are lots of options. XFX have a 5 year warranty too, which is handy.

Echoing the advice above, especially XFX PSUs. The 5y warranty is bit of a double edged sword cause if something goes wrong and the retailer will wash his hands of the matter, you WILL have to send the PSU to Holland.

no you won't, unless something has changed, seasonic rma base is in the UK and the 5year warranty XFX offers on their psu's is handled by seasonic

Re: Recomended PSU and opinions for this build.

Last XFX PSU I had problem here in UK (typical Core edition, clicking noise), after contacting XFX (because the buyer lost his proof of purchase for the vendor) I was advised to send the unit to Holland for further investigation, no free post or anything like that.

The RMA was raised from the XFX website because I forced the buyer to register his unit for the warranty and support.

    It happened this year.

    Thanks for the replies guys,

And that's why I was so reticent to choose a PSU, would have never considered XFX for anything (particularly a PSU). Its often down to company that actually manufacturers the base unit so thanks for the recommendation.

Was actually looking at the EVGA Supernova 650W Gold 63£ before it, apparently good reviews and warranty.

I just did a quick Google search, & couldn't find a single review for the EVGA 650W G1... It appears to be made by FSP, who have a reasonable reputation, though. I know the Supernova 750W G2 has had good reviews, but that might be out of your price-range.

Tell me about it. But I will continue buy XFX products (flawless experience with the graphics cards and the PSUs are good too, beside the rattle).

Re: Recomended PSU and opinions for this build.

Well thought I might as well update the thread, the system is now purchased and assembled and it came down to this:

    Asus Z97-A S1150 Intel Z97 DDR3 ATX £100.17
    Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz 8MB S1150 'Devils Canyon' Processor £238.94
Fractal Design Define R5 Black Pearl Case / Fractal Design Define R5 Black Pearl Case £75.50
EVGA 750W SuperNOVA 750 B2 Hybrid Modular PSU Power Supply £64.32
    Corsair 16GB (2 x 8GB) Vengeance Pro Red DDR3 1866MHz CL9 £117.13
    Crucial MX100 512GB 2.5" £119.00

    Total + Delivery £717.24

There is also £45 cashback yet to be claimed, which I reckon puts the whole system rather nicely price wise. With the exception of the SSD bought from amazon, all parts where bought together from... Dabs somehow

    http://oi59.tinypic.com/155535u.jpg
    http://oi59.tinypic.com/ab4eh0.jpg
    (rather low quality pictures tbh)

With the exception of some iffy Asus applications I made the mistake of installing everything went smoothly, case was joy to work with and cable management options are pretty good. Only problem is that I now have 300£ burning in my pocket for a GPU and no real reason to justify it

Although I cant see why I would bother overclocking for now the next step is to do some tests, so what array of applications do you normally run on a new system?

Re: Recomended PSU and opinions for this build.

    Stability test(s) or benchmarking test(s)?

For stability & overclocking: OCCT, prime95 and maybe 3D/PcMark.

For benchmarking(with comparisons): 3Dmark, PCmark, Sisoftware Sandra, Cinebench.

I recommend at least 500w. 600W if you will be getting a GPU.
