New ITX Build need help with cpu & cooler

    Hi all,

I've decided to build a small pc for mostly hd video and blu ray watching, bit of photo editing (photoshop), odd game but using onchip gpu so nothing modern, I might put dedicated GPU in at a later date if the onboard lacks.

Case is not changeable and Mobo are
    Silverstone sst06s
    Gigabyte Z97
other specs are irrelevant for this, can't decide on CPU and cooler for this.
Basically is there enough room/point for a good cooler with an i7 4790S or will the i5 4590s with a low profile cooler be adequate???

For what you want that's overkill, both motherboard and cpu's

    I'd actually suggest looking at the amd FM2+ cpu's and boards, http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-a...-hdmi-mini-itx + http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-a...-r7-95w-retail
plenty of cpu for your needs and the best ondie gpu.
However if you do stick a graphics card in there the ondie becomes pointless
I'd stick with an i3 and unless there's a specific feature you want, then just a simple H81 chipset itx board

EDIT: as to the SG05 and cpu coolers,
CPU cooler cannot exceed 82mm in height
for something like an i3 the stock cooler is fine anyway

I'm not a big fan of the AMD chips they generally run hotter and so need bigger/faster fans,
the system needs to be quiet and quick.
    still looking..

Re: New ITX Build need help with cpu & cooler

I ordered the Silverstone AR06 for my SFF build.
I had very limited options and wouldn't normally spend £25~£30 on a cpu cooler, though.

Stock coolers work fine in terms of cooling but they usually have to get a bit loud to do so. Most 3rd party ones will be quieter, Arctic cooling stuff is pretty cheap if keeping costs down.

There doesn't seem to be much reason for the S versions of the chips, though, unless you are in one of those tiny flat HTPC cases. You can manually throttle the CPU if you need to anyway.

One of the benefits of haswell for htpc is that it can do 23.976 fps output.

This is a very good low profile CPU cooler. Noctua-NH-L9i-Cooler-Socket-1155
