    System crash - retrieving data

My 3XS system has died after 5 good years. I am in the process of configuring and purchasing a new 3xs system. I will email Lee shorly with a few questions about the system spec. In the mean time I wonder if someone can help me with this problem:

The system had 2 x WD740 Raptor Hard disks in Raid 0 configuration (I think it's called like that. It is the confiuration for faster performance...).

I have tried installing one of these hard disks on another computer at work, but all I get is windows asking me if I want to format the disk..
I need to get some important files from the hard disks. Is there an easy way to do that ?

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

    Hi,

Its a striped array, meaning some of a file is on one drive and the other part on the drive. You will need both drives.

There are applications that can try and rebuild the raid array, but if one of your drives is physically dead you may be in trouble, however if both drives at least spin then there is a change some applications can recover data off the drives.

I am assuming that one of the drives is dead by the way, if both are working then you WILL need to plug both in and configure the bios for raid etc.

    Cheers
    Jon

Re: System crash - retrieving data

    Hi Jonj1611,
    thanks for your reply.

I believe that the issue with my system is to do with the motherboard and not the hard disks.

Would you know what are the settings I would have to use in the bios if I where to install the two drives on a PC I got from work?

Can I setup the striped array on any PC or can it be done only on specific motherboards?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: System crash - retrieving data

It all depends on the motherboard mate, I really couldn't say off hand I'm afraid.

I believe and I may be corrected here, as long as the bios supports raid then it can be done on any PC if you already have a striped raid setup. If its a software raid then as you wouldn't be able to boot the drives anyway you may become stuck.

I am not an expert on raid, only having set it up once or twice.

Hopefully someone with a bit more experience might be able to give you some more definitive answers.

    Jon
