Far Cry 2 crashes to desktop or freezes

I played Batman Arkham Asylum comfortably using high settings. After completing this, I installed Far Cry 2 with the latest 1.3 patch. My 2GB ATI HD5970 has the Catalyst 10.6 drivers. On the Far Cry 2 screen, I adjusted the AA to 4x and the Direct X to 10 and the game was running quite well and then after about 30 mins, the game either froze or crashed to the windows desktop.

Surely my graphics card can handle Far Cry 2. Has anyone else experienced any similar issues on the Black Widow Extreme.

The desktop resolution used within the game was 1280*1024. I cannot figure out if it is related to screen refresh rates which was set to the default 60, Anti Alias or Direct X. I have not tried the Direct X 9 setting but DX 10 is supported.

My i7 950 is overclocked to 4Ghz.

I gave up trying to play farcry 2 a year or so ago. Completely different system to you but same problem.

I have not had any other customers report this issue, I have a copy of FC2 at home and will install it on my system and see if there are any issues maybe its to do with the Overclock, you can try and run the system at Standard speeds and see if that works ok

I have Nvidia Cards in my system so I can only test if the issue relates to Overclocking or the X58 chipset

I just want to let you know I tried Far Cry 2 on my system and it seems ok though I do get the odd pause in game which is weird as I have an SSD drive 3 x GTX280 cards and 6GB of Ram with an I7 920 Overclocked to 4.2 Gig !

I tried with the OC lowered and OC off and the performance and micro pauses are the same...

Maybe there are some issues with this game, I have played many others like AVP , Dragon Age , Fallout 3 and had no issues the same

Hi Ben,

I tried Far Cry 2 yesterday with the default settings and DirectX was set to 9. After about 15 mins or so, it went straight to the desktop with no errors. I have not had any issues with other games.

Not sure if this has anything to do with quick saves in the game.

There are various forums regarding Far Cry 2. I don't think it is related to the Overclocking as Batman - AA and Bioshock gave me no issues.

Many "solutions" out there, but FC is very buggy and it's hard to find what causes it (as it can be many things).
