    System Died

    Me again. Sorry.

I was just playing a game and the system crashed. Horizontal lines across the screen, wouldn't respond to any inputs. I was forced to power off the system.

Now when I power it back on there is plenty of fan activity but not much else. No signal seems to get to the monitor and nowt happens.

In the case I can see two lights on the motherboard. A red power symbol and a green-lit reset button. I can't recall if they are usually on or not.

I've logged a support call but I wondered if anyone could suggest anything I could safely try to either get the system to start up or at least to give more useful info to the Scan support folks in the meantime? I'm never by the machine during working hours so anything I could do to speed up the diagnostic process would be good.

    Hi Rufass

It sounds like the VGA card has failed, we can arrange a replacement card be sent out to you and collect the old one if you are ok to replace this yourself or arrange an onsite engineer to replace the card for you if you are not

Please let us know how you want to proceed

    Cheers

    Ben

    Hi Ben,

Which is likely to be the quickest and easiest given that I'm not going to be there from 7-7? I am happy installing cards, though less so if it turns out to be just as difficult to arrange for the old one to be collected in terms of being in, or if it turns out to be the first step in a to and fro-ing of components one visit might've avoided.

I'm beginning to regret my decision to give ATI a try again, this is what happened the last time I tried one and made me stick to nvidia for about 4 cards.

    Hi Ben,

I think if I was just bringing the card in rather than the whole machine that would be doable. Can we arrange that?

How do I do that Ben? I didn't save the reference number and I haven't received any emails in response, which is what made me say I thinik I might've typoed it in my PM to you (which contains various details).

    Re: System Died

I've logged another request as follows:

    Hi,

I logged a support call last night for my recently purchased Scan 3XS system but not sure if I mis-typed the email address as I got no response.

I've spoken to Ben via the forum and he thinks the problem lies with the GFX card and advises to replace it. I'm supplying my work address for collection and delivery as suggested:

    <address removed>

I've removed the card but am unsure what to do with it now. As it came as part of a built system I have no packaging to transport it in, I'm also unsure what do with any of the unused leads etc. that may be in the Mobo box that all the various bits were in. I take it I only need to return the card and that your agent will provide packaging when they collect?

    Cheers

    R

    Your ref. OLQ683260

    Re: System Died

Erm, I've logged 2 requests now and had no response to either. I can't have got the email address wrong twice.

Edit: Got two emails from Scan at around the same time as this post. Collection arranged for tomorrow.

    Hi Rufass

We have emailed you the details and the new card will be delivered tomorrow and the old one collected, use the packaging for the new card as advised in the email we sent you

We also emailed you last night so maybe there is a fault with the mail server of spam filter at your end?

    Cheers

    Ben

    Hi Ben,

I got both the email from you and the RMA email the same time I posted (see edit), thanks there.

I got no email last night. I have checked my spam filter to be sure but see no reason why it would block emails intermittently anyway. I know I can receive emails from you sometimes, maybe there is a fault at your end? Was this email from last night some sort of automated response to the call I logged then or something else? What about the call I logged the night before?

Tell me the address you sent the missing email from and I will raise an incident with my service provider.

    Re: System Died

I've installed the new card and it's made no difference. The amount of time I've spent dicking about with something I paid a lot of money not to have to dick about with is ridiculous, especially as it's currently the biggest doorstop I've ever had.
