Problems with case from Scan build

    hello,

I purchased a 3XS system from Scan in 2007, based on the Silverstone TJ-09 case.

Recently, I began to rebuild the system (i7 upgrade). However, I'm having problems with the internal case fan mount (blowing onto the VGA). Scan replaced the standard fan with an Akasa Amber. In the process of doing this, it seems one of the screws for mounting the fan has been MASSIVELY overtightened. Nothing whatsoever will get it out.

I've tried both slotted and the "cross" type head screwdrivers (perfect fit), and an electric screwdriver. However, the screw seems to be completely embedded in the plastic.

I've also tried bending the fan this way and that, and eventually it came away (the other 3 screws came out fine), but there is still a bit of plastic left along with the stuck screw. I've even tried melting the plastic off, but it cools down too quickly. I've also tried cutting it off, crushing it with pliers, and even heating then cooling quickly with freezer spray. Nothing whatsoever has worked, it seems the thing is completely impossible to remove.

Also, I'm having issues with one of the top exhaust fan mounts. The mount does not retain the fan well at all on one side, the fan will keep falling out on this side.

Is there any way at all for Scan to supply me with replacement fan mounts?

    Thanks,

    Odai.

EDIT: This may be a double post; as I posted something similar about an hour ago, but I can no longer find it.

    Hi AD 15

The Fan mounts are from Silverstone we dont have any cases we can take parts off unfortunately, the fans have been in that system since we built the system in 2007 and if you have taken off the part which i think you are referring to the entire fan housing for the Amber Akasa 120mm Middle fan then the screws may have stripped in the process ....

Please take pictures of the fan in question and we will look into this for you

    Regards

    Ben

Re: Problems with case from Scan build

    hello,

    Thanks for your reply Ben.

It is indeed the housing for the middle fan I had to remove. The screw I was referring to was one of the 4 that were holding the fan to the steel mount.

I did give it another bash last night, and I actually managed to remove it by gripping the plastic with some pliers, and using a different electric powered screwdriver. However, the screw was coming out at an angle, and the hole for the screw was significantly wider than the other 3. It seems the screw was simply not inserted properly.

I did end up with the mount being bent slightly where the damaged screw was. Is this going to be a problem, would you reccommend me to get a replacement?

I'll upload the photos ASAP tommorow.

    Sorry to take so long.

As you can see from the third photo I tried (in vain) to melt it off.

    Hi AD15

The fan housing as its metal gets hot and more than likely this has caused the screw to become too tight to remove, the system is over 2 years old, is it just a screw for the case you are after?

We dont have any Silverstone parts at Scan you will need to contact the manufacturers directly for any spares

Re: Problems with case from Scan build

    hello,

I had difficulty removing the screw before I tried heating it. The flame wasn't anywhere near hot enough to considerably heat the metal anyways, it wasn't hot to touch afterwards.

What I'm after is a replacement fan mount, not a screw. Reason being that there is a small "dent" in the housing. I also have a problem with one of the plastic (black) fan mounts on the exhaust vents not being able to retain the fan properly (doesn't seem to be locking).

    Thanks,

    Odai.
