XFX ATI HD 4890 from Scan - PC will not power up

I have just received an XFX ATI HD 4890 Black edition graphics card.

It comes with two power connectors, a 6 pin and an 8 pin.

If i connect them both, PC will not boot. Need to reset CMOS to get it to power on again after removing power cable from gfx card.
If i connect only 6 pin, PC will not POST with repeating beeps (not sure of BIOS make as PC will not boot! )
If i connect only 8 pin, PC will not boot. Need to reset CMOS to get it to power on again after removing power cable from gfx card.
If i dont connect any power to the graphics card, PC will not POST with repeating beeps.

I have an expensive Corsair 620 PSU so that can definitely cope.

I have an Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard, which again shouldnt have a problem.

Before the last graphics card started to die (display corruption), everything was working fine. The mildly unusual thing with my setup is that i have had the PSU rocker switch off for the last month while awaiting the arrival of this card.

    Can someone help me?!!!

That would not prevent the PC from booting. The gfx card does not need anywhere near its full power demands simply when it POSTs.

    Corsair HX620W delivers 54A over 12V.

Re: XFX ATI HD 4890 from Scan - PC will not power up

    Sorted it:

Interesting problem with the PSU though:

The HW620 is a modular PSU but has some captive cables, including an 8 pin PCIE cable. If i use this it doesnt work, if i use the modular one, it does (must be a different rail or something??).

What was also required, but which i had also tried but without the above at same time, was the irritatingly titled "EZ-Plug" (4 pin molex) on the motherboard (not so "E Z" to run a cable there without it flopping around near the CPU fax ) - i connected this again and it worked.

    I suppose i should upgrade this old socket 939 motherboard shouldn't I!!

    Thanks for your help guys.

PS - OMG this XFX 4890 is the loudest gfx card i have ever had !!

And if Scan do not respond what are their customers supposed to do??!! Come on - get real!?

This forum is used by Scan so they can keep their support costs to a minimum (or ZERO as in this case).

By all means moderate this forum - but when you start 'moderating' legitimate postings from helpful users in favour of business, you are jeopardising the very nature of an open forum, and users will simply leave.

and it keeps it all very easy to track fro Scan.
I have no doubt that with Scan's financial savings, they can afford to read a whole thread and give their input as well.

Re: XFX ATI HD 4890 from Scan - PC will not power up

I have a similar problem but mine says "There is a video card power connector unconnected to the psu" on screen when i attempt to boot. I have a modular 650w corsair psu which has 6 pin cables with 2 on the end so 8 is possible. I've plugged it into the graphics card correctly but nothing. Anyone got any ideas?
