    Samsung 1TB F3 rattling

    Hi,

I bought a 1TB Samsung F3 hard drive a few months ago which has been working perfectly, and silently until about a week ago.

Since then it has suddenly become very loud when under load, such as when booting or copying large quantities of data around. In this instance the noise is like regular access noise but very loud and rather disconcerting.

The drive is suspended via elastic and the accoustic management is enabled so it should be pretty much silent, and indeed was until this rattle started.

Whilst the drive currently seems to work ok, I'm rather concerned by this noise and whether it's a sign of impending doom. Can you suggest any course of action here? I could RMA it to Samsung but I fear they'd just say it's working fine and return it to me.

    Many thanks,
    Toby.

Have you ran the manufacturers dignostics tool to see if there is any internal problem with the drive?

If not I would recommend that firstly.

Also, if you have not already, log the issues your having with the tech/returns department at the link Here and they will be able to assist you further with your query.

    Best Regards,

    Hi Lee,

I've just run the ESTOOL and it's come back without any issues. I took the opportunity to knock the acoustic managment a notch which has helped a little bit but not much.

I've raised the issue via the link as suggested.

    Regards,
    Toby.

Right, I've just had notification that an RMA has been raised for me to return the drive but I'm still a bit wary of doing so as I feel it'll just be tested (probably using ESTOOL), deemed to be fine and returned to me, probably at my expense.

Is this a likely scenario? Should I just put up with the noise and leave it?

    Cheers.

If you reply to the OLQ with your questions and concerns, the returns department can see these and answer them accordingly.

Could try defragmenting it too, just in case.
