Hi
About three or four weeks ago, I contacted Scan, asking them what to do about a clicking noise coming from my power supply.
The power supply had only been in use for a couple of weeks at most. However, after roughly 30 minutes of use, there was an audible, fast clicking noise coming from the power supply. I'm sure that the power supply was the source of the noise. I stuck a toothpick into the fan when I had just turned the PC off, and the fan was spinning down, usually, you would hear the clicking noise slow down with the speed of the fan, however, when I stopped the fan with the toothpick, the clicking noise instantly stopped. There were no obvious wires that were obstructing the fan, which leads me to think it was a bad ball bearing, the sound was a mechanical clicking. Either way, it didn't sound healthy.
Although I recieved no written response from Scan, they authorized an RMA for me. The power supply was well packaged, according to the guidlines in their email. After Scan recieved the power supply, and tested it, the result was "No fault found". This confused me, as I was more than positive that the sound was coming from the power supply. During the RMA process, I had also bought a Corsair TX650V2, to replace the CX500. When I installed the TX650, and booted my PC up, I ran the PC for 8 hours, over the weekend, gaming and watching movies. There was no audible clicking noise, even when I put my ear right up against the back of the case.
I asked Scan to re-test the CX500, asking them to replicate my set up, with the PSU in an elevated position, fan facing down. I also asked them to run the PSU for at least an hour. I was certain that this time, they would hear exactly the same sound as me. I was shocked when I checked back on the Returns Tracking Page, to find that there was no fault found again.
The only explanation I can offer is that maybe the PSU got knocked in transit, which re-seated the ball bearing. No-one is really at fault here, I trust that Scan's RMA team can genuinely find no fault with it, but running in my PC, it was clear that there was something wrong with it. It makes me uncomfortable to think that I would have to pay a fee for something I knew was genuinely faulty. Is there anything I can do about this?
