Technical help: problem with r9 270 graphics card (I think)

    Hi,

Bought one of these a few weeks ago: 2GB XFX Radeon R9 270 (LN54596) on the 24/1/14 from you guys.

Installed it that day and it seemed to work very well for the first two weeks (I played BF4 and Dawn of War 2). 2 days ago I found I couldn't play any games one morning, and have not been able to run these games since. My computer still boots, runs windows and all the standard programs like Office and internet browsers without any problem. It just crashes on games. Whenever I start up any game, the game crashes as soon as any 3d processing is required - but the computer recovers and takes me straight back to desktop where I have to close down the game through task manager.

In BF4 after the level loading screen where it starts requiring 3d processing, the whole screen goes white and the game crashes. On DoW2, I get past the introduction to the home screen where there is a 3d model, but there are big blocks of bad pixels everywhere and it crashes after a second or so.

I think it's the graphics card, although I'm not that techy. Windows Event Log has logged the crashes as:
'Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.' I can't think of anything I've done to the computer that may have caused it, it just started happening one morning.

I've removed the graphics card, and the games do run (but not playable at all, as expected) using the onboard graphics, so I wonder if it's the r9 270 graphics card. I don't think its anything wrong with Windows or my DirectX as the games seem to run using the onboard graphics.

I've reinstalled the games, removed and replaced the graphics card (including making sure the PCI-E power is plugged in), uninstalled and reinstalled the AMD Catalyst display drivers and rolled back Windows to the last time I was able to play games. None of these have worked.

    Could you guys help?

    My system:

Packard Bell M5741 (bought from PC World a few years ago) - so not sure what motherboard it is.
XFX PRO Core edition 450W PSU
7gb RAM (3gb came with the system; 4gb Corsair XMS3 1600 added myself)
    640GB HDD
I run everything at stock speeds, I do not overclock at all.

    Thanks, Toong

PS Despite being an off-the-shelf computer from PC World, it actually has decent airflow (vented side panel, I've put in a couple of case fans too). When I was able to game, I don't think it overheated but I never checked the temperatures then. The games are currently crashing when the system temperature is 16-20oC, as it's not even had the chance to warm up so don't think it's overheating.

    toongchin,

We have replied to your thread on the SCAN forum also, this does I am afraid to say sound like a graphics card problem, however please try our suggestions from the SCAN forum first before we consider RMA.
