DVI-I single link cable over 2m to connect graphics card output to monitor

    Hi

Please see quesry posted elsewhere on hexus that I got a helpful answer to

    Hi

I have used VGA monitors for years and only switched to DVI with the purchase of my Mesh PC last year which I specced with a 7900GTX.

I recnely moved my system from under my desk to the side of it to ensure that the side and rear fans arent obstructued (as the temps went a little high last summer)

I was a little concerned about the strain on the leads so I bought USB extensions for my keyboard and mouse and ordered what I thought was an extension for my DVI (thinking about it now I should have just bought a long cable)

When said cable turned up I found it wouldn't plug into my graphics card as it had too many pins.

So before I buy another, can anyone advise what the difference between the cables and their connectors is please?

    Cheers

I am now looking for a DVI-I single link cable, preferably 5 metres to connect a TFT monitor (a Xerox XA7-19i if thats any help) to an Nvidia 7000 GTX graphics card

I have scoured scan.co.uk but cannot find one, does such a thing exist or is there a problem with signal attenuation over 2 metres (I've also seen something referred to as a DVI repeater, I'm assuming this is to boost the signal in cases of severe attenuation.

    Any advice appreciated.

The benefit of DVI is that length (to an extent) doesn't matter. It will either work, or not - being digital - 0s and 1s. So 2 meters is fine

    Hi Dave

I'm trying to obtain one longer than 2 metres but cant seem to track one down so have posted here in the hope that the scan folks might be able point me in the right direction as I can't find one on their site and the other likely candidates such as Dabs/Ebuyer don't seem to sell any longer ones.

Thanks for clearing up that issue about signal attenuation though.

Carl - while you're at it, can you also get some DVI dual link cables.

pctechxp - Dual link cables have double the data bandwidth (and so double the number of data pins) and allow higher resolution screens to be powered by your graphics card.

    Single link = max 1920 x 1200 resolution @ 60Hz
    Dual link = max 2560 x 1600 resolution @ 60Hz

I'm surprised your 7900GTX doesn't have dual link outputs though. What model is it ?

Not sure of the board make but it only accepts the single link cable, I did buy a dual-link and it just wouldn't fit as there's too many pins

I got the 7900 GTX when it was brand new (it actually held up the building of my Mesh PC by a day as they were waiting for the cards to come in)

The first models probably didn't have dual links because the silicon was new.

Single link in fine for my purposes, I play games but not constantly so am comfortable with 1024 x 768.

I'll prob renew my hardware in a couple of years anyway and I'll get a SLI system either built by Mesh or Scan as I wouldn't touch Dell with a bargepole and I work shifts so really cant be bothered to build myself.

Any luck on obtaining these cables Carl?

I have seen them elsewhere on the web priced at 35 quid each!

Hope Scan comes in under that.
