Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

I think someone buying a rig at this kindof price point wants something a little different?
Sure you/I can make something 80%+ as fast for 1/3 the price but thats not really what this one is about.
Its like buying the Ferrari or Impreza? Both are fast, one is 1/3 (or less) the cost. If price to the buyer is not a factor, which would they rather have?

Thinking it's probably better to wait til the new version of the 30" dell monitor available with this PC (3007WFP-HC), the 3008WFP, comes out (soon apparently)

I wasn't even going to respond again till I saw your defensive post. We're not talking about buying any pre-built computer here, I fully understand why people DO buy them... but this is a different kettle of fish in relative terms of cost and what you're actually getting out of it ie: very little more than you could build or buy for £2-2.5k. ANyway i'll shut up now, feel free to delete my post.
first of all I do not need to delete your post that would be wrong and that would be defensive I do not need to fight my corner as the facts speak for themsleves.

You said you could get the parts for the Cobra for under 2k I challenged that as I knew you could not, now you seem to say 2 - 2.5k which you have raised (still does not cover the costs with or without paint job) I would like to know where you buy your parts. I do not mind you posting facts but simply posting false information like this makes me reply to your posts.

I also question your judgement on building a PC to this standard, your saying most people can build a 3 looped water cooling system with the t-balance specific setup to a professional standard?

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

Paul I didn't mean all the exact components, I meant I could build a PC with similar or faster performance for that price with just as effective cooling. I've been a performance PC enthuisiast for 10 years, and have tried all forms of kit, I also know that 3 seperate loops will provide barely any more cooling performance than a single high-end loop, or two decent loops. Not false information at all... I think the majority of the PC enthusiast crowd who have any experience building PC's will look at that price-tag and wet themselves knowing that only complete inexperienced novices would buy it.

Can we just leave it as agreeing to disagree, or are you going to keep posting tit for tat? I'm not trying to continue any form of argument here.

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

i was not questioning your ability to build PC's I was questioning the statement of "most people can build rigs of this calibur" If this was the case then how do Dell and PC world exist? If "MOST" people could build systems like the Cobra the they could also put together a simple desktop machine?

When Scan designed the cobra system it was not just a case of we will put in the most expensive gear and that will definately be the fastest it was months of careful reserch and development if there was cheaper component out there that would do a better job and be faster we would of used it. If you read the review on the Cobra you will see we had to make this system within certain perameters, we aimed it at performance, cooling, design and reasonable affordability other PC's that did not beat the Cobra or the Cobra was close to also were more expensive hence us winning the award. Remeber this is a Dream PC and I understand it is not most poeples "cup of Tea" but it does what its says on the box and more. All I disagree with is some of your fantasy claims of what the market want and can physically do themselves.

    Regards

Fantasy claims? I've seen myself countless times complete newbies come onto a forum asking which pre-made PC to buy and then end up building it themselves from scratch and getting a much better system for the money... I don't see how that's 'fantasy' at all...

ANyway I don't want to turn this into some silly tit for tat, it's a good PC hence why it won awards as you say, I just stand by my opinions in previous posts.

Richdog you got pwned, i understand where your coming from by saying you could get the parts cheaper ( i build systems and buy parts from scan ) but.........if you built your own and had a problem you could end up spending many hours fixing it, if you bought a 3XS system you give it back to them and let those experts figure it out, theres many pro's and conns to self build/pre built, we aint talking about a " Dell prebuilt pc " here, we are talking about a custom build. Very few people can etch and paint to the standard of the White cobra. As you say scan win awards for a reason.

Ok scan ive said what you wanted me to say, when do i get my cut ?

Congratulations for repeating the scan staff posts word for word. I feel completelely and utterly "pwned" now.

I may just go out and buy a White CObra and pay a small fortune of having a high-end PC built for me, i'm sute the extra 2k I spend will come in handy to save the minor hassle of troubleshooting it myself.

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

£5K does seem alot of money for that.

The way i looked at it was this:
A 'newbie' as you say surely wouldnt spend £5K on a system in the first place would they? If they were prepared to spend £5K on a system then surely they know enough to build themselves anyway.
The PC World comparison is also a little floored aswell because they dont build stuff like this.

On the other hand, regardless of price, it is a good machine no doubting. Richdogs comment regarding speed vs price is a valid one though but surely if Scan want to build and sell these and people are prepared to pay that, then it shouldnt be knocked in SCANS section of the forum.

Just so you know though........its not expensive to have any metal work of that size professionally sprayed. If you are paying more than £30 a unit then let me know as you are being robbed

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

I want to throw in my opinion now...
Of course £5k on a system seems high, but it's a different market and it seems to me that in this particular case, Perfectionist seems to know what he's getting himself into. With anything at that end of the market, many of us could get 90% of the performance for 50% of the cost, but there's a "90% is good enough" argument, and a "i want 100% because money is no object" argument.

I like analogies alot as it often helps to thrash out an argument.
Last night i watched Top Gear when they had on the Aston Martin DBS. Clarkson said it was basically a regular DB9 with some carbon fiber and new tyres, and costs £50k more than the DB9! He also said it was worth it! Now, £50k on some carbon fibre and rubber isn't in itself worth it, but you are buying a heck of alot of time and experience from the engineers, as well as something that by virtue of the cost most people cannot afford and is therefore in that 'cool/valuable/not-good-value' market whatever you call it.

The Scan cobra seems to be similar to the DBS in that regard - not great value for money, but oh so desirable.
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

i have to say for the money yes you get very little and no futureproofing.

BUT and this is a huge but. it is a dream pc and while bang for buck maybe low the BLING factor is huge on this pc.

if i had it i would just sitting drooling at it all day.

if this were a woman it would be someone like jessica alba and while yes some people may say dot cotton is also a woman i know which i'd rather have sprawled across my desk any day

lastly the award that this pc won it was up against an 11k vadim pc and it beat it for almost half the price

p.s PAULM can i have one now for free PRETTY PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

I would buy it if I had that much money for defo . The one I built happened in In stages and upgrades but yes its worth as much as cobra in parts but the artwork of the cobra's is for peoplewho likethere pc's like they like there cars.

I wish I could afford one. I regularly buy custompc , and I was well pleased scan to win it with entry . The last years one iirc they lost by a few marks with vadims and I wasvery surprised to see that to tell you the truth . big up to you guys .

Hopefully with a million one day and I will buy 10. keep on dreaming.

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

I personally wont ever buy buy a pre built system as I were messed around like crazy by my last pre built system by carrera SSC, and yes I can build them for far cheaper by getting cheaper components and overclocking

But its sooo fun to build your own.

With the carrera PC, the CPU was overheating beyond 75 degrees in windows and BSOD'ing or just dying. I call carrera and they say: switch it on and back off. Run disk defrag. How do you know its overheating? Did you open the case?

When they did service it they added an intake and exhaust fan!

Yes you read that right. They sent me a PC with NO case fans at all, just a CPU cooler.
