Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

I'm really really seriously torn between buying one of these and self-building...!

One of the things I'm worried about is when the time comes to upgrade (Geforce 9 series is on the horizon) of possibly breaking the warranty by opening the case? Not sure exactly what we are allowed to do
and if there will be enough room for upgrading - it looks very nice inside but a snug fit also.

Yeah, I know, the price is rather larger than usual, but most of it does seem justified.. - I mentioned it on another forum and people basically called me crazy and to build yourself (I've been reading Build your dream PC | Features | Custom PC as a matter of fact before coming here, it's a funny coincidence they are the same people rating this Scan build so highly as I came here through a bookmark not their site)
But the quality really looks good, in essence I think the difference is between buying from something like Dell you're paying for some worker on an assembly line in China or for a master craftsman's work.

That's because they were right, lol. For £5k the future-proofing is awful... the video in that system will be obselete in about 5 months when the new NV cards are released, and Penryn will be here in literally a month or two, promising sky-high clocks and cooler temps. You could build that rig yourself to equal performance for about £2k.

You're paying a lot of money for relatively little with that rig i'm sorry to say.

(Sorry Scan, you can delete this if you don't like me saying it, but just giving an opinion).

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

Can most poeple build rigs of this calibur to the standard we build with the laser cut and custom paint? Can you ever gaurantee future proof systems? If you can build the Cobra for Under 2K (the CPU costs nearly £600)with that specification I will run naked round the car park twice. Plus were do you buy your parts are we missing something

The Cobra is upgradable to a certain standard will accept the newer Intel CPU's. most people who buy built computers do so for a reason do you think they know enough to build a complex systems like this proffesionally.

Plus when you bought your GTX did you not realise they were bringing out a GT that performs close at half the price?

no offence taken Richdog but people buy computers for their own reasons..

    Regards

Re: Dream PC Winner ... Scan White Cobra

Hi Paul, most people can build a rig to a perfectly acceptable standard and calibre, there's no need to pay £500 for a white paintjob and a selection of very highly priced and soon to be superceded components. I bought and sold my GTX over a year ago, I just haven't updated my sig specs. And finally of course no offence taken... I wasn't trying to be difficult, just giving an opinion. I wasn't even going to respond again till I saw your defensive post. We're not talking about buying any pre-built computer here, I fully understand why people DO buy them... but this is a different kettle of fish in relative terms of cost and what you're actually getting out of it ie: very little more than you could build or buy for £2-2.5k. ANyway i'll shut up now, feel free to delete my post.

It's always like that though. There's always a new card around the corner that will make all the others "obselete" - but fact is it's never the case due to the fact that program and games designers have to take into account that not everyone has the latest of the latest in their system

It practically is here if you mean the QX9650, it's already available for preorder on Scan - and since they will have it in stock I'm sure it'll be included or at least available as an option for new 3XS systems...

Sure after that there is the next lot after Core, nehalem, but we're talking roughly half a year here. If you go on waiting for the next big thing all the time with technology you'll be waiting forever.

What happens if it breaks down though, then you have to spend hours faultfinding and running diagnostics and possibly having to send off individual parts for replacement once you finally find out what's causing the problem, when you could instead send it all off and have it out of your hair to do other things.
