Problem with RMA for Heatsink & Fan

I bought parts for a media center PC and bought a Quad Core Phenom and a seperate heatsink and fan as it wasn't listed as coming with one. Now I find it does I'm a little cheesed off after raising a returns for the heatsink and fan that I'm being asked to pay to return it. I'm sorry but this is down to Scan for not providing me with the correct info.

I was told ALL retail CPU's come with a heatsink but for one I read somewhere that some of them didn't and two how the heck am I meant to know this. You should list the items correctly then I wouldn't of made the mistake. Why should I be out of pocket sending it back???

The other side of the coin is why did you not call scan to double check? What is cheaper in hindsight? £5+ to send it back or a couple of pence on a phone call.

you know retail cpus always come with a hsf. why didn't you ask if you were unsure about this one. I know black edition AMD cpus come without heatsinks but all the others that aren't black editions come with one. Just send it back by cheapest post you can if you want to cut your losses. Pack it well though of course. I don't see any other option.

Somewhere? "If its on the Internet, it must be true"

Did you ask Scan for this info? If so, then you will have rights to return it at their expensive. If you guessed / went on second hand information and didn't ask then its largely down to you.

Re: Problem with RMA for Heatsink & Fan

eeh am I missing something?? I looked at the specs and it clearly hasn't got a tick next to it for if it comes with one. Am I to enquire about every detail before I buy something just in case Scan forgot to list it properly.

I also didn't know that EVERY CPU comes with a HS&F. Sorry but I'll accept blame when I'm at fault but this is a lack of info problem that Scan caused not me.

As moogle just pointed out the black edition doesn't come with a HS&F (whilst mine isn't a black edition thats still a retail CPU).

which cpu did you get slypie. link us to it on scan. Rereading your post you were told that it comes with them but you weren't sure. But it'll be hard to win this one I think, as they will argue why didn't you ask. :/

Re: Problem with RMA for Heatsink & Fan

I agree with you Slypie, if the item is described on the website as not coming with a HSF I wonder how it can be anybodys fault except the guy that put it on the website??

Yes you could have checked if you weren't sure but you were sure, it said so in the description; Why ask if you have already been informed?

Re: Problem with RMA for Heatsink & Fan

The CPU is this one and it clearly doesn't have a tick for HS&F. Also on the point why didn't I check well the info was there and I went off that. Scan is mainly an e-tailer so I tend to order online with them and their info should be correct and upto date. Why should I pay £5 to send it back for a £12 item and why should I keep it when I don't need it. It does not state anywhere that it comes with a HS&F on the description, overview or specs.

save that webpage before they modify it!
    *joking*

now I agree with you though. it doesn't state anything about the heatsink nor in the title. but legally I don't know where you stand. Saracen can help here. I'll go read those Consumer Rights and see what I can make out of it.

It doesn't have a tick or a cross to be fair. The information is simply not given.

It still begs the question though - why didn't you ask? I'm not saying that you're to blame, but for the sake of a 30 second call / forum post it would have saved loads of hassle

Well it's upto Scan I've been a customer for years and spent a lot of money with them so if they want to do me for returning the item then I will return it and whilst I won't spit my dummy out and say I'll never shop with them again I will where possible use other retailers. I don't mind forking out for things when it's my fault but don't feel I should be out of pocket for their mistake no matter how much the item is.

I'll hopefully get a fair answer from Scan.

The simple answer to that is I didn't feel the need to as I thought I had all the info to hand and that if it didn't list it as coming with a HS&F why should I think otherwise.

Also what happens if I place an order out of hours or need it urgently? This is why it's imperative that the info on Scan's website is up to date and accurate. The onus should be on Scan not the customer to make sure this is done.

Distance Selling Act, send it back get a full refund, swallow the P+P... or do what everyone else does, ditch the retail HSF and use your new one instead?

All the others either have a or a though, so while it didn't list it as not coming with a HSF, at the same time it didn't list is as coming with one.

Got to admit though, slightly confusing for those new to building PC's - a tick there wouldn't have hurt

TBH the stock one is pretty good and is quiet which is what I want as it's for a media center PC. I'll wait to see what Scan say.
