    Question Considering Upgrade...

Forgive me Scan for I have sinned, it has been 6 years since my last major upgrade.

I currently have the following parts that I want to upgrade:
    Pentium 4 3.06GHz HT, S478 533FSB 512k cache
    Epox 4PGAI motherboard, S478 533FSB AGP DDR333
    2Gb (2x1Gb) memory, DDR333, DIMM
    Sapphire ATi HD2600XT AGP, 256Mb.
    Coolermaster Realpower Modular1000M 1000W

    What I've picked out is:
intel i7 920 (D0 Stepping) - which I would like to overclock on air to 3GHz roughly
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 Exclusive Dual Fan -]OR[- Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme 1366RT KIT
    Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Motherboard
    6b (3x2Gb) memory, DDR3-1333
    ATi HD4890 1Gb based Graphics Card, PCI-e 2.0

I have a full tower case so should have plenty of room. Also I'm using Windows 7 RC1, and will change to 64bit version when I get the new bits.

I will be getting all this in the next couple of months (all being well) so what do you think?

    NOTES
    ====
The maximum spend is £900 roughly and the motherboard will not be upgraded for another 4 years so has to be as future proof as possible.
I have had major problems with certain makes of hardware and so will only get an ATi based graphics card and only intel CPUs.

    Hi there!

You've got a nice rig, I'm jealous! I'm still stuck in Q9450 land

I've noticed an immediate contradiction in what you've said your going to do - overclocking by 300MHz - and what your paying for. Your paying extra money for D0 i7 - an older C0 would overclock to 3GHz on air comfortably. Your paying for a fancy customised cooler when a cheaper one or Intel HSF would allow you to overclock mildly. Your paying extra for a very nice overclocking motherboard, and again you only intend to overclock slightly. The D0 stepping i7s can hit 4GHz on air, if you use the right cooling set up. So that kind of speed is within your reach with those components.

Thanks Ph4Zed, if the Overclock to 3GHz is successful then I will try going higher. I'm new to the whole overclock thing so want to take it in stages. If I can get up to 3.6GHz ish or higher then fantastic.

Is the 1333 Memory OK or should I go with 1600?

Hopefully the 1600 Mhz memory prices will have dropped a little by the time you come to purchase so you could get the faster memory anyway

Other than that, there's not really much more we could recommend as you've gone for the 2 best coolers that are currently available for the LGA1366 at the present time.

Thanks for the Info Lee. Finger's crossed.

Is the forthcoming axing of the I7 940 & 965 going to affect the prices of the 920 at all do you think?

You might not want to decide on your graphics card now if you are going to upgrade in a few months.

The 58xx series should be out in summer

    Re: Considering Upgrade...

Well, I'm planning on buying this all from Scan at the end of July (if delayed it will be until the end of August) so if it comes out by then for a similar price as the 4890 I've picked then I'll switch to that one.

    At the moment I'm listing the Sapphire 1GB HD4890 OC, PCI-E 2.0(x16), Mem 4000MHz, GDDR5, GPU 900MHz, Cores 800, 2x DL DVI-I/HDTV for £198.03.

My budget is as near to £900 as possible.

    Re: Considering Upgrade...

From what I've been reading on the Net, the 58xx series loks to be delayed until Q4 or even Q1 2010, so it looks like I'll be getting the 4890 after all.
