Re: What do I need to mount 3.5" drives in 5.25" RAIL based bay?

I will be really interested in the answer to this as the last time I did it I cut and bent a piece of 1.5mm galvanised steel sheet from B&Q then drilled holes at the appropriate points
Mind you the main problem I had was that I could only fix it from one side due to the rubbish design of the case
Just to add - there are a number of metal adapters available - use Google - but I couldn't find one on the Scan site
However if it was me I would consider a rubber mounting as that would make the whole thing quieter

I can't see why you couldn't use this with rails.

I can't see why you couldn't use this with rails.
It specifically says you can't.

* This product cannot be installed in PC cases which have non-standard 5¼" bay screw holes, nor PC cases with screwless (rail-based) mounting mechanisms. Also, the distance between the drive mounting screw holes must be less than 5.7 cm.

ok sorry, my bad.

Though this confuses me. If the screw hols are in the same places compared to an optical drive, I don't get why it wouldn't work, even though they say it doesn't.

Neither do I.....

I might order one just to see - I need 2 though and really need to be sure they'll fit.

I plan to move my 2 IDE hard drives to the top of my Antec TX1050 as I suspect that having them sandwich my SATA HDD in a 3 disc caddy (albeit fitted with a fan) at the bottom of my case restricted the airflow around the SATA drive resulting in the popped capacitor which then created a short in the HDD which then took out my PSU and killed my PC the other week...

hmmm next Scan order will be next month...external 1TB drive and a couple of these - unless someone knows of a guaranteed to fit solution preferably available from Scan...

Well a "garanteed to fit" solution would be a removable caddy, but then thats a lot more expensive

Re: What do I need to mount 3.5" drives in 5.25" RAIL based bay?

There used to be a pair of adapter rails especially for this purpose at about £2-3.
But a lot of this kindof accessory have jumped in price or disappeared thanks to the poor pound.

search 5.25 to 3.5 adapter (er/or?) maybe can find somewhere. If I come across one I will PM. I see EB have a pack of 10 pairs @ £25 tho

Sharkoon drive bay rails will do too if you can find those sold seperately, they come with the Rebel cases for exactly that purpose as all the front bays are 5.25 on those cases.
OK 30 sec on ebay shows up 2 types of rails for <=£3 inc p&p if you can't get it elsewhere

Re: What do I need to mount 3.5" drives in 5.25" RAIL based bay?

I have ordered one of these:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Silve...120mm-Fan-RoHS
I don't know why I didn't find it before but it would appear to do everything I want....I'll be able to fit 4 Antec rail clips on the side and slide it in and have my discs cooled - I'll only be putting 2 discs in it and keeping loads of airflow....I've decided to put my 2 SATA drives up there as the clearance required behind ( for power and data leads ) would be less.....I can't wait to finish off the box...

Maybe at last I might stop spending money at Scan now? It's amazing how much one HDD overheating and failing has cost!!
