    Wondering what SSD to get

Hello, have been looking at SSDs lately and was wondering whether I should get a Crucial M4 or shell out a bit more and get a Vertex 4.

Was just wondering if there'll be any noticeable difference between the two and wondering if the Vertex will be reliable as I know there's problems with the Vertex 3?

    Thank you

Re: Wondering what SSD to get

If you want reliability, it will be between the crucial M4 and Sasung 830 which are not sandforce based. Vertex 3 use sandforce controllers which is known for it's unreliability not just linited to OCZ, but also Corsair too. Vertex uses Indilinx Everest 2 which is there own in house controller. I am unsure how reliable they are as it's new.

I have been looking for a new SSD too. I have decided to get either the Samsung or the Crucial, far as I'm aware the difference is they use there own controller against the SandForce and both are really quick.

Actually, they don't! Even though they advertised them as such at launch (Vertex 4 that is)
They use a Marvel controller with their own custom firmware until they can get production sorted.

At which point you should probably go with the M4. Crucial has good CS.

there's hardly any difference between samsung and Crucial, I'm not a big fan of marvel, given they did my MB for the SATA III ports and problems have persisted throughout different brands in regards to speed and reliability.

Re: Wondering what SSD to get

The sammie uses an in house controller an arm9 triple core with its own firmware. Since they have been supplying Sony and Apple with ssd products for some time I would reckon they have most issues sorted.
To save some time one of the members has produced a great thread of reviews
    http://forums.hexus.net/storage/2068...ws-thread.html
This should give you a pretty informed decision.

I have gone for the sammie, its results are up there with the Sandforce and I wanted reliability as well. 256Gb is at £143 for the basic, inc Norton Ghost should you wish to clone your drive on Scan, a very decent price.

Good luck in making your choice.

My ASUS P6P67 Pro motherboards marvel chipset is pretty bad, it's caused me boot problems but once I swapped it to the intel chipset it worked fine.

I have the same mobo and the Marvell controller ceased to work too, annoying thing.

I think I may go with Crucial, I know they have great customer service and their updates are meaningful

I don't like Marvel stuff either - and personally I went with the Samsung drives vs everything else not sandforce based.

Any idea on which Samsung I should look at? Sorry for the childish questions but I know nothing about SSDs

I haven't heard any horror stories yet. Sammy are fairly unique - they're building the whole thing in house: firmware, controller and memory.
