    Xbox 360 Wireless Networking

    Hi,

after getting a 360 for Christmas I want to be able to use Xbox Live with it downstairs in the living room. My cable connection and computer are upstairs. Can anyone give me some suggestions for the appropriate hardware I need please? I dont really want to get the official MS adaptor as it seems very expensive for what it is and I want to keep the costs as low as possible (feeling the post-Christmas pinch already!)

I wont confess to being an expert with wireless networking but would using a wireless PCI card in the pc and a wireless bridge on the 360 work? And if so which particular one could anyone recommend me?

    many thanks.

Personally I'd go for the 360's wireless adaptor and a wifi router. With the new spec coming out soon, the current routers are getting cheaper and it allows you much more freedom in the long term. If you just get a wifi card for your pc, you will need to leave that on whenever you want to use xbox live.

And yes, the 360's own adapter is pricey, but it also works flawlessly. I bought a bridge for my original Xbox (that was supposedly designed just for that purpose), and had so many problems getting it to work correctly that I ended up not using xbox live very often. The Microsoft one just snaps in and is ready to go. Never had any problems with it, and the signal strength is perfect even though its buried under a load of AV equipment.

I use the Official Wireless Adapter and a Netgear DG834GT and must admit, the wireless works like a dream. I even have my router and 360 on different floors in my house.

Although, if you didn't want to go down the wireless route, you might want to try the homeplug adapter things, they use your homes main electrical wiring to send the data. Here's a wall plug sollution from Netgear: http://www.netgear.co.uk/wallplugged...it_hdxb101.php

Yes, If you are going wireless then the Xbox adapter is by far the best item, pricey i know but the best solution & again i would recommend a wireless router far above a pci card for the PC.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I'll have to save some more pennies then.

On a side note, this is now not as important as it was. My cable connection is in the computer room upstairs whilst my tv connection is obviously downstairs. During a moment of extreme boredom I decided to dabble with plugging the modem to the cable in the living room and it works perfectly, so this is on hold for the moment as its not really needed as bad as it was

Thanks for the advice though guys

I was in a similar quandry to your issue here in that I thought the adaptor was pricey. We then got the squeezebox 3 and this is now used as a wireless bridge to connect the xbox downstairs to the router which is upstairs.

It was more expensive than the option to buy the wireless adaptor but at least we've got mp3 access through the hifi.

You could have hooked the 360 up to the hi-fi and used the streaming on that

Although that is a pain because you usually need the tv on to navigate the menu's before starting a playlist.
