Wow so far Windows 7 looks exactly like Vista... I don't see any reason to upgrade if this trend continues.

This is one of the most pointless article i've seen lol. The boot/shut down times though saved it for me though.

    Same.

I messed about with the RC and to be honest i din't find any major advantages that i had to upgrade when 7 came out.

I'll probaly upgrade next time i need a new OS.

For me, other than finding out what menu Microsoft have hidden certain utilities under, I have found Windows 7 to be a very impressive OS so far. It seems to have the highlights of both XP and Vista put together; the look and feel of Vista with the efficiency and functionality of XP me thinks!!

There are plenty of people out there that have never installed an OS before. Something like this shows them just how easy it can be and exactly what questions to expect.

By all means, criticise an article if you have an issue with it but it's rather silly making a comment about it being "pointless" just because you know what to expect. Not everyone does

the boot times are interesting, when i whacked Win7 on my EEE, it booted a few seconds faster than XP..

But my memory fails me, i may have vlited that install, to fit on the 4GB SSD , but i can't remember

I don't notice it being any faster than Vistax64 to boot tbh.

And to be honest the days of Win98 & painfully long boot times are well & truly over.

    Re: Reviews - Windows 7 - Part 2: Deploying 7

SP3 shouldnt take any longer to shut down. Something is wrong there.

Vista is crap and should burn. 7 should be installed on any recent machine (bearing in mind that i've tested the RC on a p3 1ghz with 1.5gb of ram and had it useable vs vista that killed it).

If you dont need DX10 then sure. just go with a patched up xp sp3 install. (Just did my last build of XP PreSP4 using OnePieces updates. Essentialyl take SP3 XP. Add all MS patches to it. Slipstream in IE8. WMP11, and few other toys and deploy.) Saves me a bunch of time fixing ppls pcs they broke.

I've managed to get to 2.5 installs of Win7 so far and counting. It REALLY doesn't like it when you install a few too many drivers at once...but the recovery boot thingy fixed the problem.

and your response is equally pointless

Having been on the RC since it was released I now find it painfull to use Vista on my work laptop so have been looking forward to getting my copy, shame on Amazon for not sending out copies early like DSGi

Windows 7 just seems a much smoother experience, less issues, no need to kill of UAC as it is less in ur face very good all around.

I know you are comparing like for like but you could of included in the boot time the effect of using more processors from the default 1 inside msconfig.

Does Windows 7 handle this any better than Vista?

    Re: Reviews - Windows 7 - Part 2: Deploying 7

I'm disappointed with this guide to be honest, I actually thought it would be regarding "deploying"

windows 7 i.e. over a network, remote installations etc, and how stable it ACTUALLY is.

I'm surprised at how many Hexus readers find this guide useful at this stage. I for example knew the

contents of the 4 current articles about 6 months ago, I assume many did to.

It's great for what it is, but I hope Hexus will also publish a more, in my opinion, important guide on

the technical issues of W7. For example, I wasted months to determine that the buggy UAC is

unreliable and can corrupt an entire network. Windows vista and server 2008? LOL! Have M$

emptied the garbage with the "new" OS, or just covered it up?

Parts 4 and 5 are already online

Not had issues myself with UAC though. I'd be very supprised if such a huge issue was present on their server line to.

    Re: Reviews - Windows 7 - Part 2: Deploying 7

    That's great. keep em coming

On the UAC issue,...it was something like:

UAC and Security "features" make many small files on the SAN and the main server. Then, randomly,

machines stopped having access to files, and then following a server backup recovery none of the

domain machines could access the server files (50TB on the server). However, going back to win 2003

fixed those issues i.e. made the network operational again. Lack of skill or knowledge? Certainly, but

then time is money and there will ALWAYS be server issues with new software..I mean, there are still

new bugs that are discovered in server 2003..
