If Apple make it the sheep will come...
Im getting sick to death of people buying Apple products becuase they're 'cool'.
Yeah, same... they are a fashion icon, my Aunty's got an iphone 3gs, yet she doesn't even know what apps are, let alone how to use the app store. She has an iphone because it's "good".
I'll be honest and say I quite fancy one to play with,
but at £499 its a very expensive toy, and outside impulse buy territory.
Apple have OK hardware, and have managed to crack mass market appeal (make is shiny - most people are like magpies)... but what they really excel at is marketing.
Whoever is in charge of brand image and marketing at Apple deserves to the best paid in the industry, they have managed to polish up some other people's ideas with alright hardware and have the general public and most of the media thinking it's the most revolutionary and cool thing since the wheel first rolled. The repeated suggestion that Apple are "the first" with things does irritate - they seem to think they invented touch screens, smart phones, tablets and MP3 players when in fact all they did was take an existing concept shine it up and sell it well.
I'm not a fan of Apple stuff, the cost for me is way in excess of the utility provided, I prefer a cheaper & faster computer, a tablet that's more than just a basic web client, a gaming device with real buttons for proper games, a phone that I can customize and load with music of my choice as a simple mass storage device, an OS that can run my games etc etc - but I'm a power user, Joe Public isn't and so he buys shiny tat that he thinks makes him cool, all he wants to do is browse Facebook so that's fine.
Well I've got mine already and it's great.
I suppose Apple do have one use, for every sheep they convince they need an ipad a good £40+ will be paid in VAT to the government which may help us pay back the deficit...
Carry on sheep, you all need ipads... they will make you cooler...

I quite like the Apple notebooks and iMacs personally as I have used them at work. Apple is a very good design company IMHO and they know how to design easy to use interfaces well.
However, the iPad is one of the Apple products which I don't think is that brilliant. Even loads of my friends think the same once they have done some research on it and many of them have experience of using Macs themselves.
The iPad is basically a halfway house between a iPod Touch and a iPhone 3GS with a 6 bit IPS screen, higher clocked processor and a bigger battery!

From the article:
"Apple has relied on tried and true technology for the first generation of this device. In some cases, technically speaking, Apple has even gone backwards from what we saw in the latest generation iPhone that we have torn down.
Case in point, Apple is not using the do-all touchscreen controller from Texas Instruments that it used in the iPhone 3G, but has instead gone back to the three chip solution seen in the iPhone 2G. Of course, the same space limitations aren't there in a large device, and so we would speculate that the three chip solution had a lower overall cost. You can see from the image that, relatively speaking, the iPad is basically a giant battery with a tiny board attached to it (outlined in red), with some space left over for a future 3G mobile communications board."
According to Anandtech a £200 Asus Eee PC 1001 with a single core Atom N450 processor is faster than the iPad for web browsing. The Atom also has in-order execution which means most modern notebooks will be much faster than the Asus netbook.
The Apple A4 is basically their own version of the Cortex A8 used in the iPhone 3GS.

Utter nonsense please stop it's pointless..
And this makes what difference when it comes to what it does and how it does it? I've yet to hear anyone who's used one complain that it slow to do pretty much anything?
Comparing it to a netbook is a nonsense. I've used tons of netbooks, in fact my iPad is replacing a netbook. For the simple reason, I never used my netbook unless forced as it was far to slow and was no good to work on for anything but the simplest of tasks. So far my use of the iPad has been a joy. It's nice to sit on the sofa in comfort rather than hiding in the office doing my work for one.
Apple realised long ago that users don't care about stats they buy stuff that works well. It could have a 3mhz cpu in there for all I and most other people care. It just has to do what it can do fast.
I constantly amazed that people spend so much of their lives trying to convince people that apple buyers are sheep and have no idea that product x out there is far better for some reason. There are tons of reasons why the iPod/iPhone and iPad have been successful. Others dreams of having the success of apple, but generally end up with me too products.
Out of interest how many of those complaining about the iPad have actually used one? Even for a quick play on someone elses?
