Nice one AMD. Now we just need their CPUs to become more closely competitive with Intel. It'd be nice to see a AMD/Intel price war happening from the top to bottom of their respective ranges

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

Don't count your chickens until it's like that for several quarters...

Last quarter NVidia only had short supplies of old offerings and/or very expensive low volume products. AMD had a top to bottom 5000 series range...

This quarter sees the launch of the GTX 460 which is very competitive (and fills a great spot in the market), and soon probably a 450, and maybe lower end products will receive a refresh too. So I would imagine it will balance up again Q3/Q4.

Besides that, didn't NVidia make more actual profit than AMD despite the sales slump?

NVIDIA took ages to release DX11 gfx cards. And , when it did release them , it was more expensive than ATi's top DX11 card ( I think.... )

And, now this news about shipment!

Are they trying to go bust?

Finally nVidia are capitulating after months of being kicked all over by ATI.

    http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix....347&highlight=

That is a huge drop in revenue forecast. Don't shed any tears for this lot, they've been treating their own customers and the rest like idiots for years with all their rebranding and PhysX nonsense.

Not on the graphical division, but once you include losses from AMD cpus and share in global foundries then yes.

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

Last year I had an ATi Crossfire setup and I wasnt impressed to say the least. My single nVidia card still trumped the crossfire setup with a bigger dye.

I also found with the ATi drivers, nearly every game required a setting to be changed in the Control Centre just to get the game to work, the worst game for this was GTA IV. Whereas I've never needed to make any changes via the nVidia control panel, every game just seems to work straight out the box without any requirement for tweaking.

So I've gone back to nVidia for less hassle gaming.

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

Hardly surprising figures IMO. Next quarter should be interesting though, as both the GTX 460 and GTS 450 will no doubt be staking they're claim.

Also, could the Apple/ATi partnership be the first foot in for an AMD love in ?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

I doubt appl ewould jump ship to AMD CPUs. I can understand it with GPUs as the ATI ones seem to work better in OS X but i dont see that being true for CPUS.

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

I wish AMD would tie together GPU and CPU more and offer some nice enthusiast class options in the future. I love AMD though I run intel now I would go back in a heartbeat if it made sense. Just prefer them to Intel I must say. And now they make GPUs even better!

not surprising with the delay in the launch of the fermi cards, would be even higher if only ATI could improve their drivers!

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

    erm... what?!

I recently switched from a GTX260 to a HD5870 and the ATI drivers seem just as if not more stable. I occasionally got the whole 'nvida driver restarted' thing with the GTX now its just smooth sailing. Things have changed over the past like... 2 years

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

ATI cards do have driver issues, especially when it comes to HD video acceleration. Different features get broken between driver releases with certain cards and OS combinations. Their GPGPU platform isn't as widely used as CUDA either.

Re: News - AMD beats NVIDIA in GPU shipments

when ever i get an ATI card Drivers have always been some short of issue(Textures in BF:BC2 e.g. and other games) if you had issues with Nvidia norm an Underline issue with the system that norm can be fixed, ATI drivers norm Makes the issues (Brakes .net framework) or other issues that cant explain (like every things working but CF tab will not Show so cant enable CF) so reload has to be done

as i just made an i7-920/GTX460 system (sold total Overkill for Wow, 40% GPU load) and got the GTS250 back and her old dell system (1 week old VGA card i installed and as the system was to slow to run WoW in the end not the GPU)
