Re: Drone that hunts and takes down other drones in development

A range of alternative, more visually exciting, drone-killing mechanisms would also be appreciated.
Stunt kite or twelve-bore shotgun? The latter could have a whole sport aspect - e.g. "there's a another drone, ... pull" (a la clay pigeon shooting). And then there's archery practice...
They are targeting the professional market and the Rapere will be priced accordingly, the developers don't want this device to be employed to disrupt legitimate drone use.
Actually a question on this - is there any legitimate reason for these mini-/micro-drones to be over your property? I know that Maplin were suggesting that your could use these for remote inspection of your roof etc, which sounded reasonable.

Most well designed quadcopters can cope with losing a rotor, and hexa or octos will just laugh until you take out at least 3 depending on which rotors you get.

If you own property, I'm not sure at which altitude it stops being yours, but if for whatever reason a drone strays into your airspace I suppose if you were feeling particularly bitter you could bring the tango down. Or you could hunt Amazon drones, when they become a reality, assuming Interstellar style drone hunting isn't a possibility

Re: Drone that hunts and takes down other drones in development

Anyone get the feeling that this is really illegal? Little bobby just lost control of his drone and you destroyed his drone. But you were being paranoid. That's fine, no charge of damaging personal property for you!

If people are worried about the miss use of personal drones with camera's on, just imagine the miss use of a drone that can hunt down other drones and destroy property.

At the moment, I think we should stop asking ourself "Can it be done?" and start asking "Should it be done?" Because arming these won't end at a bit of string, that's for sure. Next will perhaps be a net ? Then some kind of item to hit it with like an extendible arm. Oh, great idea, lets attach a paint ball gun to it and load it with hard clay shot...

My favorite is the drone that fires a taser at people.

As to the altitude limit, if we take the current government's attitude to fraking then I guess the airspace stops being "yours" at roof height. Although I remember seeing some rules about not using it within some distance (100ft?) of buildings.

Article does say that these are designed for "professional" uses - presumably in the US. I am actually pretty worried about drone misuse since there's been reports of morons (presumably the same morons who like to fire lasers at plane cockpits) sending their drones into the airspace of airports. Ignoring that there's also the concern about them being used by some kind of high-tech "peeping Tom" to get sexual jollies (??) by spying on others. At least when it was some bloke in a dirty mac it'd be easy for the police to identify and pick up the miscreant, but if it's just some flying toy then there's little recourse surely? Unless UK law's going to be changed so that camera equipped drones have to be registered?

And how long before the paparazzi decide to use these things to spy on their targets? (Not that I'm worthy of a pap's attention) In which case I guess the anti-drone drone company has got a ready market in the rich and famous.

Well I say we avoid these counter drones all together and go for installations of automated ground to air missiles. Perhaps we could adjust the Starstreak missile system?

Or train falcons to hunt them down.

Or have a guy run around with a really long pole poking them all down.

Harpoon dartguns would be better. Get rid of pest and free drone/camera equipment too!

Seriously ? You remember an obscure line from Spaced, but not the famous line from Fight Club ?

This is a bloomin' train wreck.

I was saying that "Flight Club" is a much better play on words due to "fight club" being the original saying.
