Re: Microsoft Windows 10 will be available from 29th July 2015

If you are seeing a small white windows icon in your taskbar offering to update to Windows 10 then this was caused by update KB3035583.

It can be removed by going to Control Panel > Programs > View installed updates (under Programs and Features). Select update and click uninstall. It can also be ignored by selecting "customise" white arrow and setting this icon to Hide icon and notifications.

Next time the PC prompts for an update just select KB3035583 and hide.

If this is the sort of nonsense MS is going to push then I won't be going anywhere near Windows 10.

I've heard if people don't install Windows 10 Microsoft are going to send out tiny fairy workers to upgrade PC while people are sleeping.

    LOL

Would those "fairy workers" be the ones that you're not supposed to get wet nor feed after midnight?

Was there any final word on how Microsoft are going to handle illegitimate copies of Windows? That was a big point that just seems to have fallen away.

Was answered a while back. An unlicensed copy will allow you to upgrade to Windows 10, but it'll still be unlicensed and unsupported.

Yes, they are not doing anything about them by the sounds of things.

Whether they were drumming up hype or journalists were incorrectly interpreting what they were hearing, I do not know.....but it seems now like the only free upgrades will be for OEM devices that shipped with Windows 7 or above.

    Interesting.

I did think it was a very positive thing from them. Obviously I should remember they are trying to make a profit!

People were speculating that they were going to follow in the footsteps of Google and Apple. Basic stripped-down operating system for free with a cut from sales on the Windows store to cover the costs.

    Obviously that isn't the case....YET.

This is incorrect - I've got the upgrade gump (and reserved) and I absolutely have a retail license. Where I haven't got the gump? On my Win10 machine with the Win7 OEM key... go figure.
