God damnit, I was really hoping for a 4c/8t part that would sit between the 8600K and the 8700K for about £300. Looks like I'm waiting until Cannonlake to upgrade.

I can't see hyper-threading making its way to more than a few odd chips in the i3 line anytime soon, and i5/i7 are likely to be 6c+ going forward excepting on mobile. Unless you need a K part, the 8700 would seem to give what you're looking for and gating should allow apps that can't make use of more than 4c/8t to run it at a decent turbo frequency.

I'd seen hype saying that the 8700K would be $409, so this $359 seems better than many expected. Highly likely to form the core of my next system in Feb / March. Price for the far more sensible 8600K doesn't look bad either.

$350 is the usual price for the x700K. They've only thrown in more cores to make it more appealable vs Ryzen. You can bet your ass that it'd be a 4c/8t part if Ryzen didn't show up and piddle on Intel's party.

Nah OC is a must. I used to have a 2500, and it was awful. I put in a 2700K instead of building a 6700K-centered rig, and OC'ed it to 4.8ghz. It was the best performance/£ improvement I'd ever gotten.

IPC is more important to me than thread count, however 6 isn't enough and I don't need 12. 8 is a sweet spot. It's purely for gaming; with the next gen of consoles being 8 cores, it stands to reason the games that are ported to PC will also take advantage of 8 cores.

This sounds pretty appealing tbh. A minor drop would twist my arm further. Maybe it could slightly speed up development on Ryzen +/2 too. That's what I'm currently waiting for. Had such amazing bang for buck from a 2600k, being the 2nd gen Intel part (bought in March '11) that I'm still sat on it 6+ years later with no particularly worthwhile upgrade path.

Would be tempted with this but... I think I'd rather go with AMD's 2nd round as the CPU wars are back on.

Only Z370? Might as well not have bothered with everything but the 8700k. Here's a fun table, looking at the 8350k and assuming a straight pound-dolllar conversion for that bulk cost:

Column on the right is the maximum Z370 motherboards can cost before it's cheaper to put the respective AMD chip in an A320 motherboard (many of which would run rings around that i3). Right now, the cheapest Z270 motherboard is about £95, putting the i3 right in the crosshairs of the 1600X - but it's intel, since when have they passed up a chance to up the prices?

I have been planning my new ryzen 7 system but now this hummmmmm ....really I am so happy the CPU wars are back and intel cant just chill and rake in the dollars like they have been .

Also, do you guys still overclock? i have given up overclocking and just buy the fastes CPU clock default speed there is as not many applications and games benefit much for Overclocking nowadays and i cant be asked messing about with it anymore

Games and applications do greatly benefit from overclocking, if you were CPU limited. There are results showing that in some apps you get perfect OC scaling even with the $1999 chip intel just released.

But as for whether I'd consider OCing my next chip.. it depends how much overhead there is - I think there's been a trend recently of manufacturers getting more out of chips and releasing them closer to their limits for the voltage range they're targetting. If I can get all cores to around 4.5ghz without needing a k series chip I think I'd go without (as long as memory OCing was still possible).

Not me. Back when you could reliably push a Celeron 300 to 450MHz or an Athlon 5000+ dual core unlock to Phenom II to get 50%+ performance overclocks it was well worth it. Maybe a bit of aggro for a 30% boost. But these days I value working power management and reliability more than absolute clock speed, so my FX8350 for example has never been properly overclocked as the extra 10% performance just isn't worth the aggro (the motherboard did overclock it a bit without me noticing for a while which shows the lack of difference it makes).
