So the US govt is doing to a US company exactly the sort of thing that the US is accusing that the Chinese Govt COULD do, but secretly.. Mmmmmm food for thought ??

What have they actually done? All I have seen is fears about what they could do.... which when compared to what we know Google, et al do anyway seems pretty mainstream these days.

They left a back door in their firewall/switch software and have a government that puts pressure on them to leave back doors for their agents to be able to access.

Ah wait, no, that was Cisco...

Makes you wanna cry , couldn't write the script. Snooping . back doors , bloody CIA has been at that for as long as I can remember in every country round the world. Trump is acting like a tyrant , suprised he didn't get a bit part in Game of Thrones. Perhaps he'll get a seat in the E.U next , would be quite fitting with their arrogance and behaviour.

Re: Google revokes Huawei's Android software license

What an idiotic, blatant protectionist measure. Only allusions to a risk from Huawei despite demonstrable proof of wrongdoing by US companies. Pot, meet kettle.

Seems more like the US is afraid of competent competition from a company possibly surpassing them both telecoms equipment and consumer devices. What a shame it would be the consumer as the real victim yet again. A shame as Huawei have had arguably some of the best Android devices on the market in recent years, and usually for less extortionate prices than the competition.

Hopefully some sense is seen and a deal reached for the sake of the same parts of the world.

Personally I'm still waiting to see what exactly they're supposed to have done. The whole 'they're bad but we're not telling you why' just doesn't cut it for me.

And even if there were intentional backdoors, yeah it's bad, but only on par with some US manufacturers, and Huawei appear to have made more of an effort to prove otherwise.

@Saracen... any suggestions for a decent dumb phone, at the rate things are going China will stop making western tech and the west will stop updating Chinese hardware so I want to be prepared lol

It's not just google stopping 'trade' either now, intel and qualcomm have stopped too... I suppose this is one way of 'stopping' the competition from eating into 'western' company profits.

This could work out really well, giving a big incentive for someone to finally break the google stranglehold on android. It'd be hilarious if this resulted in a hauwei-made competitor to google play that takes off, and starts eating google play's revenue in the west

Swapping one tech giant for another really won't improve things that much

If I have to pick between trusting Google and the Chinese government, the choice is obvious!

Well, Huawei are known to, and have stated they are "working on their own OS".

Though to what degree that means they (China) nicked someone else's are are busy filing off the serial numbers, changing the plates and giving it a respray, remains to be seen.

More problematic mught be accessing Google services from it, like Gmail, Google Maps and so on.

As for the dumpphone, mine's so old it's only just past steam-powered .... and I don't mean the gaming folk.

But I knew I was right about smartphones. I think I might ask for a name-change to The Oracle.

Next week - winning lottery numbrrs for 2029 .... for a modest up-front fee.

I can see that. Google takes 30% of sales through Play. Huawei could undercut them and probably get a good number of developers on board. Huawei devices are already plentiful so there is a market.

I'd hope this will serve as an instructive moment and make manufacturers plan for a Google-free system. Clean AOSP with your choice of market and less telemetry feeding into Google, the US government, PRISM or whatever would be nice.
