pointless. And the context menu key is rather useful - nay essential - when your mouse packs in for no reason/win10 decides to "update" its driver for you/ etc etc. I can think of a dozen times I would have been stuck without that key. And anyone who locks their machine win+L will miss having a right hand windows key. If MS wants to introduce the keys stick them on the top right above the numeric pad. Don't strip useful keys for gimmick keys. That is not wise.
This was made by infantile children for infantile children.
Serious users do not need a bleedin' emoji key. I want rid of every emoji button on everything I use as they're just in the way. If I want to smile at someone I'll put together the appropriate colon and bracket, thanks.
And as above, being able to completely operate a PC using the keyboard is essential to fixing problems. Any software which relies on a mouse for any operation I find clunky and difficult to use.
If I ever get a keyboard with this nonsense on, it'll swiftly be remapped to something useful.
As the article states, proper users should spend the money on a decent mechanical keyboard. Ideally one with some media and shortcut keys as volume controls are useful and other keys can be remapped easily. How hard is it to map Word launching to a key or key combo? Or as I do, press "Windows" key and type "word".
I'm extra grumpy if you hadn't guessed.
regarding the right win key, I have an older razer Blackwidow keyboard and where the right win key is normally they have replaced it with an FN key, I didn't like the layout at first, but I got used to it after a week. IMO YMMVOriginally Posted by ik9000

As to the other keys, completely pointless for me personally but at the same time can't say I've ever used the keys in those positions either but I'd rather have the context menu button than the emoji/office ones, I can at least see a reason for the context menu.

Serious users do not buy Microsoft keyboards in the first place. They get something mechanical, or a backlit one with peripheral screens, media controls and macro G-keys.
There are 66 emojis on this forum alone... Hundreds of others.
Which is the appropriate one and how many symbol combinations can you remember at age 95-odd?
I can see quite a few different user groups who would benefit from things like this, who'd not be able to or know how to set up complicated macros and things. The same people for whom that Power Toy popup thing with the WinKey is of such benefit.
Grump away, I don't care and I also wouldn't want it myself... but credit where due, this does have use for those outside of the gaming and PC enthusiast worlds.

no context menu key? i tried useless lenovo laptop which had the key replaced by fn key, obviously threw out the laptop instead
Kinda sums up microsoft atm with its "hey kids!" attitude.
Windows 10 is fast becoming a phone os and things like this just add fuel to the fire for people that actually use a pc everyday and are used to how it works.

Well I do lock my PC and no Windows key on the right side of my keyboard either, but then again, it's a Norwegian keyboard. We need some extra letters and then have several special characters require an Alt Gr press to get, rather than just Shift. I guess it's just what you are used too (I have long enough fingers that I can reach the left Windows key and L with one hand).
However, I am quite partial to the split keyboard design. Only problem is, nobody make one with mechanical keys (Or at least, one I can afford) so I'm torn between getting a new mechanical or staying with my (Ancient now) PS/2 split keyboard when/if I ever upgrade my PC (It's 12+ years old).

1~ I too long for the days when typing in a smily in a text box didn't get it automatically replaced with a smily icon.
2: I have a Corsair K90 here sitting to my right it's an early model but an excellent keyboard. Unfortunately I spilled something on it and it stopped workin' properly so it needs a good clean probably. It's been like this for months...
3: I should be grumpier! because I'm missing a lot of sleep these days... and no it's not an "infantile" newborn : ]
Hexus, I like the smily key (I do facebook a bit these days), but I dislike Office since the 2012 version so the key makes me wary.

Be Careful on the Internet! I ran and tackled a drive by mining attack today. It's not designed to do anything than provide fake texts (say!)
I really like the MS ergonomic keyboard, but it's a real shame they haven't gone for a mechanical option with this release. Even if it only came with a single switch type (e.g. Cherry MX Black standard switches).
I've got an Ergodox, and whilst it's fantastic, it's clearly not the quality of a mass-produced device like Microsoft keyboards, and it's eye-wateringly expensive.
As the emoji key, I don't see any problem with a dedicated unicode shortcut to save having to remember all those alt-keys. I don't tend to use smileys much from unicode, but I certainly use a lot of other things °©™.
