Indeed - although it seems to be affecting most of north america inc Canada too, due to how logistics works for many retailers.

This may all change in a week given Biden is expected to reverse the damage the Trump administration has done the best he can, but the details are obviously unknown.

Gonna buy AMD then, I dont like paying too much extra for a few more FPS that barely would be noticed... and also if want to run at extreme FPS, you wont be running at 1440p or 4K for e-sport anyway.

I read the price hikes are down to gddr6 shortages so I don't think it's a case of scalping from the manufacturer. This is more likely an increase in cost just being passed along. The demand for gpu's is through the roof at the moment, I cant even pickup a 1660 super for my lads computer at a decent used price.

Hopefully this will resolve itself with the take up of gddr6x on new cards

I bought a Radeon 9800XT for around £400 as I remember it around 2003/4 (it definitely wasn't worth the premium over the 9800 Pro but that's beside the point). Rough inflation calcs put that around £650-700. In terms of relative performance mid range vs top end (say comparing to a 9600 XT / Pro back then). I would say the 9800XT would be equivalent to something like a 3080 today? Ignoring the fact they aren't actually available, isn't that around the price of a 3080?

If anything in terms of relative performance I would say cards like the 1060 6GB, 1660 Super amongst others have been better value than many previous generations.

£400 in 2003 is £638 in today's money.

The 9800XT would be the equivalent of the Titan NOT the RTX3090. It was the fully enabled highest end chip of its generation. The RTX3090 uses a salvaged chip:

A lot of the "top GPUs" now are 2nd or 3rd level salvaged chips. The main difference is the branding. Before the top gaming chip was the full GPU or second salvage. Now the top tier is called a Titan. The second tier is the TI or 90(90 used to mean dual GPU).The RTX3080 uses the third tier bin.

A GTX580 in 2010 was the fully enabled GF110 chip,and was $500. Using US inflation figures that is $600 today,or $720 with VAT,ie,£530ish. Guess what the equivalent bin of GF110 compared to the RTX3080 was:

It was the OEM GTX560TI,as the GTX570 was a second tier bin like the RTX3090. The GTX580 would be the Titan in today's range.

Also,the GTX1060 and GTX1660 are not great compared to the 6600GT,9500 PRO,8800GT and HD4850/HD4870. The 6600GT was frequently beating the X800 PRO and FX5950! The 9500 PRO was in-between a Geforce Ti4600 and Ti4800,but was priced closer to a Ti4200. The 8800GT was around 85% of the 8800GTX released 12 months earlier for 45% of the price. The HD3870 matched the X1950XTX for less than half the price.

The HD4870 came along and was nearly 90% of a GTX280 for less than half the price. The HD4850 came along and was the speed of the previous generation 8800GTX/Ultra for 38% of the price.

These mainstream GPUs came close to matching the previous generation flagships,or we typically at least 70% to 90% of their speed. The GTX1060 didn't even come close to the GTX980TI,it was about on par with the GTX980 which used the midrange Maxwell chip.

The GTX560TI which was the mainstream Fermi GPU,was the 3rd in the range.

8800GT was 80% to 90% of the performance of the flagship 8800GTX/Ultra and almost the same at mainstream resolutions.

The 8800GT was 3rd in the G80/G92 range(8800GTS 512MB and 8800GTX/Ultra above it). The 8600GTS which together with the 2600XT were considered one of the worst mainstream generations for years(previous to the 8800GT which essentially replaced it),were roughly half the speed at mainstream resolutions.

All of these mainstream GPUs were below £300,once you add US inflation to the RRP,and today's exchange rates.

Things started to change after that. The Pascal GTX1060 was located 6th/7th in the range - the Titan Xp,GTX1080TI/Titan X,GTX1080,GTX1070TI and GTX1070 were all above it.

The GTX1660TI,was way down the range. So RTX Titan,RTX2080TI,RTX2080 Super,RTX2080,RTX2070 Super,RTX2070,RTX2060 Super and RTX2060. Its 10th in that range.



Just over half the performance of the RTX2080TI/RTX Titan.

This generation in theory looks a bit better,but it appears the RRP is a marketing move and the real pricing is much higher(OEMs have been complaining too).
