Re: Nokia N82 Review and Impressions...

A quick note to anyone thinking of picking up an N82 in the next month or so -- 2 new colour variants (Black & White) have now been confirmed.
(A respected US-based independent phone dealer has confirmed both via their Nokia rep while Nokia Finland themselves have thus far only confirmed the White.)

Photos of the White version are already in the wild:
The real white Nokia N82 appears

You'll notice that this only differs from the currently available one in having White rear panels (not a bad thing IMO -- the pale Grey of the present version is horrid, rekindling memories of Nokia 'Xpress-On' covers of old).

Images of the the Black version have yet to appear (beyond Photoshopped mock-ups and glimpses of a Nokia engineer playing with one) but it's thought this may be officially announced during CES 2008 which begins on Jan 7th or the Mobile World Congress in February.

Re: Nokia N82 Review and Impressions...

Ok I got my phone last Friday, and I can honestly say this is the phone I have been waiting for for a very long time. I wont bother repeating what already has been mentioned, but I will say the battery life is superb.

I'm having a little difficulty with the GPS, but i'm sure that ill figure that out, or it may just be down to my location on planet earth lol.

One thing i would like to know more of, is the symbian applications, is there any good resources for extending the functionality of the handset by downloading some apps.

Battery life has been VERY good so far in "normal" every day use. It will drain more rapidly when listening to MP3's and using the video function, but even then you get at least a good days use out of it. Sat-Nav battery life is also very good, not too far off of the N73 which is great considering it has the receiver built-in. I also bought a spare battery off of Ebay, they're so cheap it's silly not to have a backup in case you get caught short!

So far i've bought the following for my N82:

Spare Official Nokia BP-6MT Battery: GENUINE NOKIA BP-6MT BATTERY FOR E51 N81 N82 PHONES on eBay, also, For Nokia, Mobile Phone Batteries, Mobile Home Phones (end time 06-Jan-08 17:00:00 GMT)

Nokia N82 car charger: In Car Charger for Nokia N95 8GB N73 N82 6300 N81 E51 on eBay, also, For Nokia, Mobile Phone Chargers, Mobile Home Phones (end time 06-Jan-08 19:04:10 GMT)

Nokia N82 screen protector: 2 x Brand New Screen Protector Film For Nokia N82 on eBay, also Screens LCD, For Nokia, Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Home Phones (end time 06-Jan-08 22:30:00 GMT)

Oh yeah the Sat-Nav... will I ever stop being impressed by this thing? I brought it indoors again yesterday and it actually locks onto a signal from inside my bedroom, which has an attic above it and the walls are 1960's quality as in: good. Fair enough that's in "assisted" A-GPS mode but still impressive. I've never seen it below 3 bars at its very weakest, and sometimes it locks on so quickly from cold it actually embarasses my 'old' bluetooth SirfStar III receiver. While the Garmin Mobile XT software i'm using isn't quite as user-friendly as Tom-Tom, it is still very good and also highly accurate. For me the Sat-Nav has been the biggest strength of this phone.

With the benefit of hindsight I would pay £350 for this phone again in a heartbeat, no worries. It's the ultimate multi-functional device... perfect sat-nav, fantastic photo/video quality and a great phone all in a single package. it's going to take something very special form Nokia to top this... the only major improvements I could think of that would make this the ultimate phone would be a larger touch-screen to make browsing more pelasurable.

I've had a couple of reboots, but not frequent and i'm sure upcoming firmware will iron that out.

Indeed, something i didnt point out, on my first use of the phone i found that it kept freezing and locking up, this worried me becuase i thought i may have had a dud one, but after a few reboots and casual use, i have no problems at all.

Im very keen to get some themes downloaded and some applications, any ideas on where to find some?

Re: Nokia N82 Review and Impressions...

Is it possible to change the way the text message list displays the messages?

Mine displays the senders name "last name, first name"....

    This is incredibly annoying.

Re: Nokia N82 Review and Impressions...

Really want this phone but Vodafone don't seem to do it I'm approaching the end of my 18 month contract with them so I'm now thinking it might be a good chance to try someone else. I want to spend about £25 a month and hopefully get this phone free... reckon o2 will do that in store if I walk in with my PUK all ready to go??

It's available on o2 online now, came close to ordering it, but will wait and get one second hand and choose my own tariff rather than be sucked into a £35 a month contract with worse rates.

Re: Nokia N82 Review and Impressions...

I'm not sure if i have something configured incorrectley or if this is a setting that can be changed...

    I save all my contacts with the following credentials;

    firstname
    lastname
    mobile number

for some reason when a contact sends me a text message, in the message list their name is displayed backwards.

    This is highly irritating.

Does anyone know how to get around this ?

    Hi,

Yeah I'm having same problem as you RECOiL™. Quite annoying seeing the name displaying backward. Wonder if anyone here know the way to fix them.

GPS works pretty smoothly in the open. Does not work indoors. Camera is brilliant. Audio playback is impressive. Its also solid and I prefer the N82's form factor compared the slider of the N95

I did a short review of the N82 on my blog

The GPS will obviously not acquire a lock indoors in most cases, but when you get a lock outside it should stay fixed in your house... it certainly does with mine.

Re: Nokia N82 Review and Impressions...

I have upgraded the firmware on mine, using the nemisis tool to change the product code and then the NSU.. 11.0.17.

The overall operation of the phone is alot faster and somewhat smoother. I recommend this upgrade.

The only bastid thing is the back to front names in text messages, i mean what sense does this make? its even more confusing when sometimes the names appear front to back! bug perhaps?

Wow I don't even know that you can upgrade the firmware on the phone. Mind tell me how to do that? I know that the name is really stupid... aww I wonder will this ever fix.

Downloads : B-phreaks Online Shop, Your Source For Mobile Phone Unlock Solutions

Use that tool to change your product code to a european code, then when you connect your phone to the pc and run nokia software updater, it will download and install the lastest unbranded firmware.

It is pretty easy, and it improves the overall performance of the phone..

In response to the above posts, it’s worth mentioning that changing the region code will in most cases void your warranty.
